Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Tucker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
About 4.5 years ago, I lived out in Wichita and worked in the dental and law field for companies that were fundamentally successful. While working in both fields, I found myself telling myself “no” in multiple aspects. No time off work, no financially or simply no energy to enjoy a basic dinner with friends. While life is not a race, I had too many goals and drive to sit at a desk working for someone else the rest of my life. Once I researched Esthetics and realized I could go to school and make a living out of two things that overly interested me (Eyebrow waxing and pore extractions), It was a no brainer. I made that life-changing decision to embark the journey of never having to tell myself no ever again!
I moved home (KC) in 2019 and began my Esthetics Career at Summit Salon Academy KC where I completed the program after ten months total in May 2020, with my last eight weeks online due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. I Immediately took and passed my licensing exam after graduating but fell to some negative news that I was no longer needed at the medical spa I intended to start my career at. The cosmetology employment industry was at a standstill due to the pandemic and I had a few friends/ acquaintances approach me about wanting services but I had nowhere to legally perform them. After hard consideration, detailed research and the discipline to fight through all obstacles, Urbane Esthetics became my reality!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of my struggles include the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the US in March 2020, just two months before I was supposed to graduate esthetics school. My employer pre-pandemic could not accommodate my employment as an esthetician once the economy reopened. I found myself with no direction as to how my career would start.
I found my first room rental space and began renovations quickly but fell to a roadblock when applying to for my business license in regarding to zoning. All of my hard work of renovations and money were down the drain because the simple office space I found was in a building that was in an industrial considered zone and a beauty spa needed to be in a commercially zoned building.
We’ve been impressed with Urbane Esthetics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a 2x licensed and insured esthetician specializing in skin health, corrective skin care and full body waxing. I take pride in my brow wax and transformation along with my knowledge of product and physical disciple to successfully rehabilitate one’s skin.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The Covid-19 pandemic has been a horrific tragedy for the entire globe. As someone who had contracted the virus, personally the pandemic and quarantine shut down could not have come at a better time for me. I was able to save money, finish school, become licensed, open a business, slow down to prioritize my life and work on my mental toughness. Society spent along of time alone the past year, I decided to use that to my advantage to push for success.
