Today we’d like to introduce you to Justine Cohorst.
Justine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Kansas City girl who has always loved all types of crafting! I enjoy sewing quilts and clothing, painting artwork, and crocheting. I’ve even upcycled old windows into art! I first started stamping jewelry many years ago to make a gift for my sister, who was pregnant. I made a necklace for my sister and a keychain for her husband. Then I didn’t touch my supplies again for a few years.
After I had my first child, I started stamping jewelry again to make some personalized pieces for myself and for family members as Christmas presents. I really enjoyed making these pieces and loved seeing the recipient’s faces light up when they received a unique piece made just for them. This joy inspired me to start my little business!
I took an interest in stamping and designing custom personalized pieces and KC-themed jewelry. I strive to add a unique touch to all of my pieces to make them truly special. My sons, husband, and Goldendoodle inspire me, support me, and put up with my messy craft room that is organized in the most unorganized way!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, I feel like I have been blessed with a fairly smooth road! Since I am currently a stay-at-home mom, I consider myself a “nap time CEO.” I get the majority of my work done while my kids are asleep. This was a struggle with my first son, who never seemed to nap for longer than 35 minutes! I raced against the clock to get business done while he slept. My business is much busier now, and thankfully my second son is a champ at napping and lets me get a lot done!
My business tends to get extra busy around the holidays, so I struggle with balancing my personal life and business during these crazy times. My heart wants to help as many people as I can and make them the perfect gift for a loved one. But there comes the point, that I just have to shut it down for a few days and enjoy the holidays with my family.
We’ve been impressed with Jaycee Designs KC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Each personalized item is hand stamped by me in Kansas. Every item I make is a unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-stamped creation made from individual marking tools. Due to the handmade nature of my work, you can expect slight variations in alignment, spacing, and depth. No two items will ever be identical – this is what makes your order uniquely yours!
One thing that sets me apart from others is that I strongly believe in giving back to the community. Each quarter I donate $2 from every order received, to a different local Kansas City charity, on behalf of Jaycee Designs KC. I am proud that my little business can help make a difference in the community.
