Hidden Gems: Meet Dorian O’Connor-Williams of Dorians Beauty Supply

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorian O’Connor-Williams.

Hi Dorian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I come from humble beginnings and still growing. Born and raised in Chicago, I was taught early on how to think big and dream big. Follow my dreams, and that’s what I am doing. I relocated my family to Kansas, graduated from college with a degree in business management and from nursing school, and have been working in the same nursing facility for the last 12 years. Stability is very important to me and I instill that in my children. I have been a nurse for ten years and enjoy my career very much. I have held many managerial positions in nursing from charge nurse to Director of Nursing. Before leaving Chicago, I wanted to “run my own business”. I wanted to open a staffing agency for health care. Once I moved to Kansas, I had to put that dream on the back burner so I may complete school. During my time in healthcare, I realized that I wanted more, I still wanted to fulfill my dream to run my own business. I stepped out on faith and self-funded my start-up for my beauty supply store and have been walking in faith ever since. I have the 1st black owner beauty supply store in my county.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were many obstacles and stumbling blocks on my journey to opening my store but like every other self-motivated black woman, I pressed my way towards the mark. There were many financial challenges with my start-up as I self-funded my business. I had to postpone my grand opening which was set to launch in March of 2020 due to the pandemic. My store remained closed until September and then I had a grand opening. Procuring vendors has also been very challenging as there is another beauty supply store in this area. Most vendors have no compete clauses so some of my options are somewhat limited.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a small black-owned business with BIG potential. For us by us.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
We promote individual businesses like hair braiders, beauticians, barbers who may work out of their homes. We offer military discounts to show our appreciation to our veterans. Cultured DesignZ is a subsidiary to my beauty supply store and does custom print clothing, drinking classes, and other merchandise that we sell in the store.
