Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Keith.
Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I had a strong interest in music. I can remember pretending to be a radio DJ as young as eight years old. I also remember receiving a Walkman cassette player for my birthday when I was about ten, and I was ecstatic because it had an AM/FM radio tuner. When I was 13, I had a job as a newspaper carrier, which I delivered newspapers from my bicycle. One of my customers in the neighborhood happened to be a DJ. With permission from my parents, I tagged along with him to a high school dance on a Friday night. Turns out, I was a really good roadie. And I thoroughly loved every minute! He appreciated my help so much that he welcomed me to attend any future events.
So, for the next three years, I continued to attend every possible event that I could. Weddings, high school dances, class reunions, birthday parties, car shows, all the while I was learning the tricks of the trade.
When I got my driver’s license, he decided I was ready to go out on my own. He bought extra equipment and started sending me out on gigs.
Finally, at the age of 20, he offered me to purchase the business from him. And so begins the story of Music For The Masses DJ….
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any business, there have been hurdles along the way. Being a single owner/operator, I cannot rely on anyone else to fill in if I am under the weather. I can remember a few times in which I had to perform in front of a crowd being very ill. Also, I have missed out on many family birthdays, weddings, and parties because I’ve had to work.
Sometimes, the weather can interfere. Driving in a snowstorm or getting rained on during a wedding ceremony, I have experienced both, but the show must go on.
We’ve been impressed with Music For The Masses DJ, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Music For The Masses DJ provides sound, lighting, and entertainment for weddings. I take pride in providing a quality service for my clients. A wedding is a once in a lifetime experience, and it is important to me to make it special.
I work with my clients to not only plan their special day but to execute their timeline and communicate with their guests.
I am also very intentional about the music that I play. I typically spend several hours prior to a wedding not only creating a playlist of songs that they have requested but also adding some that I feel match their personality.
It makes me feel good when a client expresses to me how great of a job that I have done. I enjoy helping people have a great time and make great memories.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the years, I have seen technology transform the DJ industry. Equipment has not only become smaller but also more efficient. I see this trend continuing in the future.
New technology will hopefully not only make a better experience for the client but an easier job for the Dj to execute.
