Today we’d like to introduce you to Carleshia Walker.
Carleshia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey in real estate back in 2013. I was looking for a career change as I had been working in the finance industry up until then. I wasn’t feeling fulfilled in my work and so I started reading up on different fields of entrepreneurship. When I graduated high school, I had aspirations of becoming a neonatologist but later changed my major to business. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I did know that I wanted a big corporate office with a window like in the movies. I wanted to dress up and conduct meetings, I wanted to be in charge! While taking my classes in school, I realized that the skills needed to climb the corporate ladder were the same skills needed to build a business but I had no idea what my business was. After doing a lot of research, I decided to enroll in real estate school and that decision changed my entire life! The first home I ever sold was to my parents and I still remember that feeling. It was a phenomenal experience for a lot of different reasons. I only sold 2 homes that year and wasn’t sure if real estate was going to work out because it seemed that no matter what I did, I could not pull in more clients. I asked for help, attended trainings, and convinced myself that I had given it my all and was moving on from it. I sold a few homes here and there and ended up going back to work for a temporary agency. After switching jobs and trying other entrepreneur endeavors I got serious about real estate because nothing else gave me the feeling of helping a family buy and/or sell a home. My business grew tremendously as I was dedicated to learning the systems and tools to put into place to be successful. I changed brokerages twice more and landed with a company that offered 100% commission. Within 3 months of being with that brokerage, I was able to quit my job and become a full time agent. I mastered my systems and tools and practiced them consistently and because of that, I more than tripled my business. In June of this year (2021) I opened my very own brokerage, Walker Realty Co. with the motto, “Excellence. Every Client. Every Time”. This motto comes from Colossians 3:23. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” No matter what type of real estate transaction a person is involved in, they deserve to be represented by an agent who is knowledgeable, understanding, and will go to bat for them. God is wonderful and he never ceases to amaze me! To see my dream bloom into reality has been a surreal experience that I couldn’t be more grateful for. I’m asked often why I would leave a 100% commission company to open my own brokerage and the reason is because my mission is MUCH bigger than me. I want to show the world that God can do absolutely anything!! Walker Realty Co is not just for me and my family, it is for all of us!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a realtor is not at all easy and was not a smooth road until I put my all into it. There are still some rough days and always room for more learning but I’ve come a long way! You have to continue to push past the feeling of being defeated and just trust that it will work out exactly how it’s supposed to. Once you start to see the results of your hard work, you’ll know it was all worth it. You have to learn to manage your time, your money, and your business without anyone telling you what to do. You are your own boss and as cliche’ as this sounds, you have to be able to “manage” yourself. Treat your business like a business because if you treat it like a side hustle, that’s exactly how it will work out for you. When I first started, I struggled with discipline and consistency because you will not always want to work. I also struggled with being unapologetically me in this industry because as African American’s, we are taught (both directly and indirectly) to conform. I’ve learned that being myself is what makes my client’s choose me and being me is my competitive advantage.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the proud Broker and Owner of Walker Realty Co. LLC. Walker Realty Co. is a real estate brokerage servicing the Metro Kansas City Area. We help clients to buy, sell, lease and invest in residential and commercial real estate. My job as a realtor is to educate my clients on home ownership, building wealth through real estate, and ultimately showing them how to acquire and leverage one of the largest assets they’ll ever own. As a broker, my job is to help my agents through real estate. I educate them on the processes and systems, negotiation tactics, and all other aspects so that they can help their client get to the closing table. I also help them to build their businesses into empires and create wealth for themselves. Many people have questions about how to get started and are sometimes unsure of what questions to ask (whether on the agent side or the buyer/seller side). My job is to share the information that I’ve researched, studied, and mastered to help others get to their goals.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Not very surprising but a fun fact about me is that I absolutely LOVE to swim! No matter the occasion, I am always ready to swim. I own about 40 swimsuits and am always adding to my collection.
