Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Westermann.
Hi Melody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been the cafe manager at the Crossroads location for PT since August 2020, however, I got started out in coffee 25 years ago with PTs as a barista.
Since then, I have run my own business as a licensed nail tech, I have attended university, completing coursework in biology, business administration, and human resource management.
I am currently working towards my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration & Human Resource Management with a graduation date of March 2025.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The pandemic presented me with many obstacles that required me to get creative with regard to business operations.
Trying to navigate the different restrictions, people getting sick, and learning to operate with a smaller staff have proven to make things complicated.
However, in the end, I believe that it has made me a stronger manager who is prepared to handle almost anything that life can throw at me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about PT’s Coffee Roasting Company?
PT was born in 1993 in Topeka, Kansas, out of Jeff Taylor and Fred Polzin’s simple desire for an excellent cup of coffee.
Four years and two retail locations later, PTs began buying green coffee, roasting, and traveling to the origin, forging the Direct Trade partnerships that have made us a leader in the specialty coffee industry. A simple question guides our judgments and motivates us every day: Is our coffee the best it can be?
Over nearly 30 years we’ve learned that it’s more important to succeed on our own terms than on anyone else’s. And when we focus on superior quality, from seed to cup, our business thrives.
Nearly 80% of the coffee we produce is acquired through our Direct Trade program. Exceptional coffee depends upon great partnerships, and our partners are selected for more than just their harvests—they are socially responsible and environmentally conscious.
We roast dozens of single-origin specialty coffees and signature blends for our retail locations, wholesale clients, and online customers around the world.
We were named Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine in 2009 and are among the leading roasters reviewed by premier industry resource Coffee Review, with 40 scores of 94 and above and multiple finishes in the Top 30 Coffees of the year. PT’s Coffee can be found in fine cafes, restaurants, and select grocery stores nationwide.
We remain a group of explorers committed to sourcing, roasting, and drinking the best coffees in the world. We warmly invite you to join us on this journey.
Located in the Crossroads Arts District, our first Kansas City cafe was designed and modeled by Second Life Studios using reclaimed wood from more than 100 pallets that had carried green coffee to our roasting facility.
Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are available in addition to a full coffee and tea menu, with options for people on the go or those needing to stay awhile for a study session, business meeting, or lunch break.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I make my own luck! It’s about working to build and maintain relationships as a way to network and gain exposure.
I am an active participant in my future and feel that there is no good or bad luck; only opportunities from which to learn and grow.
