Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Villarreal.
Hi Corina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in the family business of event planning in San Angelo, Texas. I graduated with my Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Angelo State University while my husband and I were stationed at Whiteman AFB, Missouri. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Angelo State University, where I began my career in healthcare as an Exercise Physiologist in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Five years into my career, I knew I wanted to further pursue a field in counseling after consulting with each of my client’s traumatic attacks and their family’s worries. Upon completion of the graduate program in the Summer of 2019, I began the course of action to become licensed in the state of Missouri. In November 2019, I decided I wanted to flourish my natural crafts in floral and design and opened my LLC in Wedding and Event Design as my side gig while I further pursued the process of becoming a licensed counselor. In December 2019, I was informed I was nearly three months pregnant with our first little girl Aurora. In January 2020, my husband was informed his orders for military medical separation were processed, and he would retire in April 2020. In late February 2020, the news of COVID becoming a pandemic was announced, placing my business on hiatus and potential loss. In March 2020, my husband and I moved to Texas to be close to family. The unknown of what was to occur during the pandemic, pregnant, and soon to be retired, we wanted the close support of family. August 2021, my husband and I returned to Warrensburg to start our little family. In November 2021, I began the process of reopening my small business in Wedding and Event Design. In February 2022, YOUnicá, LLC began to operate, serving Warrensburg and the greater Kansas City area. My small business allows me to work from home, determine my schedule, and care for my little girl.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The majority was explained in the previous section. My counseling degree did not quite meet the state of Missouri’s requirements and would require continuing education to apply for licensure. While newly pregnant and my husband retiring, the pandemic was quite a wrench in my plans for a small business which I was about 99% sure was then a loss. Moving back to Missouri in Fall 2021, I gave it a go and tried to get YOUnicá, LLC up and going again. It has been quite a struggle not only trying to open the business back up but wearing every hat to keep the business going is quite a challenge!
Like in many other small businesses, I am the owner, designer, seamstress, launderer, janitor, dishwasher, accountant, marketer, and everything else under the umbrella. I am thankful I have an amazing husband who supports my adventure and steps in to help me finish shining wine glasses, steaming curtains, setting up tables and chairs, and more! It is crazy time-consuming and matches up with the known meme of leaving a 20-40 hour work week job to pursue a small business where you now work 24/7. It is perfectly true!
As you know, we’re big fans of YOUnica, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?

We provide rentals for all events from birthdays, engagements, private parties, dinners, proposals, graduations, weddings, you name it.
The name YOUnicá stems from the word ‘unique’ in both English and Spanish. I wanted to integrate my Spanish culture into my business, further providing to the Latin communities as I am bilingual in fluent Spanish.
What sets my company apart from others is that we cater to all communities. We are a Hispanic, Veteran, and Woman-Owned business who are also LGBTQ+ friendly.
Our business designs for each event and personal budget. We work diligently to provide a unique scheme to each event and add flare specific to each event. We do not offer packages as every client desires a different scape for their event.
We truly enjoy what we do! As a natural crafter and flower enthusiast, you will find me dancing with my favorite tunes cranked up each time I design. I do my best not to provide the same design for each event by integrating new scapes within each look, especially in florals. My forte is floral! All things in floral, from bouquets, boutonnières, centerpieces, arch floral, and accent floral pieces, and designing a pallet to match the scape of each venue. I note the color options of the venue when designing to ensure no pallet clashing as well as with table arrangements and floral. We specialize in weddings and Quinceñeras.
Is something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many do not know of my healthcare background. I hope to further pursue my education one day in a doctoral program in physical medicine.
