Exploring Life & Business with Catherine Bell of Properwear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Bell.

Hi Catherine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for sewing began with my mother. She taught me to sew around the age of 7. I was mesmerized by the outfits she would make my siblings and I & became quite eager to learn how to do the same. In my family, we had to share a lot of things, but with sewing my other siblings didn’t enjoy it as much so I was happy It was something I could call my own. After high school, I got my degree in Apparel Design and Technology. From college, I was connected with the design teams of Victoria’s Secret and J. Crew. Being able to see the ins and outs of those companies inspired me to come back to my hometown and create my own brand with my mother. In 2016 PROPERWEAR, our custom apparel shop was established. A couple years later we started our educational platform, Sew Simple Sewing, teaching today’s youth the art of sewing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Balance is an ongoing obstacle. Having Properwear and Sew Simple Sewing can sometimes feel like tug-a-war. God has blessed both to do really well and with the ever-growing classes and clientele, it can sometimes be a challenge to devote enough time to both. In addition to making sure the businesses are running properly, I also have to make sure my personal life is functioning well. Each day gets better and better as I learn to rightfully prioritize. I remain diligent and know that sometimes there will be a fork in the road, but that’s the life of an entrepreneur, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Properwear?
Catherine Bell Apparel Designer/Sewing Instructor

Properwear is a custom apparel shop providing clothing that fits properly. Whether through alterations or made-to-order pieces we ensure our clients receive apparel they feel comfortable and confident in. Properwear provides custom apparel, alterations, and embroidery.

The staff and I understand pattern drafting, draping, and have worked in the industry for many years so the professionalism and knowledge we provide is tried and true. Our clothing is created for each individual body. A lot of people are frustrated when it comes to shopping and they’ll alter their image to fit apparel that wasn’t made for them. We take time to educate our clients on what style lines, cuts, clothing shapes and textiles best compliment their form. We want our clients to feel proud when they receive a service from Properwear.

What do you think about happiness?
Meeting new clients makes me happy. At PROPERWEAR, we meet people from all walks of life with all types of clothing needs. When initially meeting clients, I’ll ask ” How did you hear about us?” and most times it’s from another client we’ve done work for. It’s nice to witness all of these different people connect through our store. I especially enjoy seeing clients walk away happy. Their satisfaction helps push me to make my business better each day. The reviews we receive from our customers is good confirmation that we’re doing something right, and we are really blessed to have them because they’re how we stay opened.
