Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Johnson.
Hi Shelby, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was on my way out of Esthetics school in January 2016. One of the final steps was going to Career Services to help us write our resumes and apply for jobs in the field. The woman in Career Services insisted that I apply for this lash extension tech position at a new franchise in Overland Park. I resisted for a few minutes, as my dream was to work in a med spa. I finally let her help me apply for the lash tech position but I was NOT thrilled. Within days I heard back, received my training, started doing lashes, became the trainer, stepped down, and then eventually left to start my own business in 2020. And now, I can proudly say my first year of business was well worth the four years elsewhere.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Where I am now is wonderful. However, the road I’m on has definitely had some potholes, but nothing that can’t be overcome. Leaving my former situation to start my own business was one of the bigger triumphs. Not knowing what to expect, not knowing how much people would support me on this new endeavor.
Being tired! I’m way more tired now. Spending time handling work-related things when I’m not at work. Or handling business things after I’ve already left for the day. I’m a one woman show but I’ve started to find my balance.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Lash Extension Technician. I apply synthetic hairs to a person’s already existing natural lashes to extend and enhance them. I think that I’m most proud of and what sets me apart from the others is my knowledge I’ve acquired through the years. So many things have changed in my scope of practice in the last five years that it never ceases to blow me away. It feels like there’s a brand new product and/or technique every single day!
Providing a service that makes a morning routine one step simpler while also allowing a place to nap, vent, and feel completely relaxed is what I’m most proud of brand-wise.
There are so many different ways to style lash extensions. You can be as natural as possible or as dramatic as possible (I love the dramatic lashes!)
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve had tons of support. Way more than I ever thought I would receive. My family has been more than encouraging. Even my clients are always interested in what I do and are constantly offering their kind words. My close friends show their support by understanding that I have a little less flexibility and free time now. That sounds small and silly but I think that speaks volumes. I’ve always been really social but all of 2021 has been so busy that I’ve stepped away from that recently.
