Daily Inspiration: Meet Patrick Poe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Poe. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Patrick Poe and Lolo Loren started making films together in 2012 after meeting while working together on a 48-hour film competition through a mutual friend. They immediately formed a good working relationship and started working on their first feature film Intermission, together. They have since produced 6 feature films, countless short films, comedy specials, and their podcast First Timers Movie Club. In addition to being the co-founders of IX Film Productions and working creatively together for almost 10 years, they got married to each other 6 years ago and live and work together from their home in Shawnee with their 4 lovely cats. While they are both multifaceted filmmakers and artists working on countless films in any compacity necessary, Patrick is mostly a writer, actor, director, comedian, and filmmaker while Lolo is a writer, director, producer, and filmmaker.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road of indie filmmaking is paved with many ups and downs, including the illation of getting accepted to film festivals and winning awards but also the constant rejection from countless festivals for the same projects. Our second feature film Mr. Lee was initially rejected from every single festival we entered then almost 4 years after we had thought that film wouldn’t have a festival run and had quit submitting it through a crazy turn of events, we had two festivals end up reaching out to show it for different reasons and the film ended up winning the audience choice award at both festivals and did a time where it was available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in comedy, our motto being “making the world a funnier place one film at a time” and we truly believe making the world a funnier place can make the world a better place. While focusing on humor and our love for filmmaking we also created a podcast during the pandemic because we just love movies so much and missed being on set, so we started First Timers Movie Club a podcast for movie lovers by movies makers where we sit down and discuss a timeless movie through the lens of seeing it for the first time and what about the filmmaking of it made it timeless as well as tons of trivia about the making of the film. What are we most proud of? Well, we like to quote Akira Kurosawa when asked what is his best film he’d always answer “my next one”, right now we are in post-production and will be finished any day now on our newest feature film Almost, Sorta, Maybe and we truly believe it’s the best thing we’ve made yet. What sets us apart is that we are a married couple making comedy films, not many indie filmmakers focus on comedy like we do and film festivals love a good drama or horror piece but we always want to uplift our audience in some way and have them smiling when our film is over, also being a married couple who co-direct and co-write means we always have both of our perspectives within the filmmaking process throughout every step of production.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Patrick himself is a KC native while Lolo moved all around the country as a child. They met making films here and have continued to ever since. KC is such an open and collaborative city that is incredible inviting to filmmaking full of talented creatives to collaborate with. They have met and worked with so many wonderful people in KC in terms of other filmmakers, actors, musicians, and even businesses. The KC film scene obviously isn’t LA or even Atlanta yet but we’ve watched it grow so much in our time and it is continually growing.
