Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My photography journey started when I was in high school. I would always look around at things and people and just wish I could take that moment, capture it, and save it forever. During my junior year, I was finally able to take a photography class which included using film strips and a dark room. I fell in LOVE with watching my pictures develop and creating art from them. I promised myself that I would make sure to make photography a part of my life from then on. Things for me took a turn my senior year when I found out I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I then shifted my focus from all things fun and shift all of my focus to caring for her and my education. Fast forward a few years and add few children, I was a working single mom with a new baby, and I wanted so bad to have pictures of my 3rd sweet girl. I saved up to purchase her a newborn package and her entire shoot, I was enamored. It brought me back to that dark room where I promised myself to not let go of photography. I eventually saved up for a camera and I started off taking photos of my babies sheikh then lead to friends and family. Ever since, I’ve been overcome with love and support from my community, friends, and family. I am still learning every day, and I see my work improve as I continue to grow. I am now a mother to four beautiful souls, a critical care RN, and owner of K. Maurice Photography.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If you know me, then you know that I’ve never taken the smooth or easier route, lol. It has been a struggle to maintain my household, daytime job, and business, but I refuse to give up. I hope that one day I can open a beautiful studio and transition to photography full time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a family, newborn, and maternity photographer. It took me a while to find what I love most, but babies, families, and beautiful pregnant mamas have always made me so happy and excited. If I had to pick, my favorite shoots lately are maternity. Closely followed by themed shoots. I have found a way to create a “mini party” for birthday celebrations and it’s the BEST!!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m not sure that everyone knows that I am a Nurse lol or that this photography journey is still fairly new to me.
