Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Chance.
Hi Kelley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Kelley Chance, and my husband and I own Chance Adventure Co. Our mission is to help families get outside and spend quality time together! We started out camping with our two boys in our first vintage Airstream trailer back in 2014 and quickly realized how much we LOVED it. We wanted to share that love with everyone else by making our beautiful tin can gems available to rent! Camping in these magical silver bullets has become our family’s favorite pastime – seeing new sights, hiking new trails, discovering new lands and people, and of course, spending time together in nature.
We currently have three Airstreams in the fleet – Carolina, Georgia, and Desi. Carolina, a 1983 Excella, has been a home on wheels for lots of explorers since late summer 2020, traveling to Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, Badlands, the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, Indiana Dunes, Kanopolis, and more. Carolina is available for road trippers with vehicles that can pull her (she’s a heavy beast), as well as campers who don’t want to tow. We’re happy to deliver, set up, and pick up the trailer to local campsites. We’re even working on a concierge menu of items to make your stay even easier – just show up and start your campfire.
The other girls will be road-ready soon, once their renovations are complete. And speaking of renovations, we’re in the process of building The ‘Stream Shop, where work on our trailers, as well as other owners’ homes on wheels, can take place. Our little girl gang of campers also inspired the Chance Adventure Co shop. We have our own line of outdoor-inspired t-shirts and hats, as well as a curated collection of candles, kids’ books, stickers, pins, and more – perfect for any nature lover. We pop up around Kansas City with a trailer and sell online as well, and we’re always adding to the shop.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Renovating vintage trailers is always a tricky task. Just recently, Desi was on her way to get new flooring when her door popped open on the highway. Being made of aluminum, it bent and became unusable. We had to track down a 1970’s door (which, luckily, we found in El Paso), then replace the door latch as well. But it’s always a labor of love!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We have big dreams for this little trailer rental business! Everyone deserves to have access to wild places and fresh air, and we think there’s no better way to get it than with a quirky, charming tin can trailer as your home base. We have a huge vision and can’t wait to bring it to KC and beyond.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The pandemic certainly created more need for accessible camping options for people. After all, camping is the original social distancing! Renting a trailer for an adventure creates a safe, contained way to travel and experience our country’s most beautiful scenery. I only see the need increasing.
- Trailer rental starts at $175 a night. Campers can take a trailer on the road with them, or we’re happy to deliver, setup and pickup for you, so no towing experience or truck is required.
