Daily Inspiration: Meet Kearra Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kearra Johnson.

Hi Kearra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a graphic designer from Kansas City, MO.

Growing up, I have always had a fascination for creativity and entrepreneurship but I really stepped into it in high school. I attended Paseo Academy of fine and Performing Arts, and there I discovered graphic design.

I found myself spending my evenings after school in the design lab creating illustrations, cartoons, photo edits, and anything else I could attempt. Soon after, classmates were asking me to create for them for a whopping $25 (they had the nerve to say that was too expensive). This began my freelance design career.

It only made sense that I continue this design thing in College. I attended the University of Missouri for my BFA with an emphasis in Graphic Design. Courses at the University of Missouri emphasized the fundamentals of design and gave me the chance to explore the corporate standard of design. That education and my overall adaptable and fun style left me fairly well-rounded upon graduating. There I continued to take on design gigs for my peers by doing flyers for orgs, illustrations, and graphics to support events on campus.

Up until me graduating, I held a few different roles that clarified a few things: design could get me anywhere if I work hard and I could not tone down my entrepreneurial desires, regardless of the roles held.

While employed at my first big girl job with Kanbes Markets, I was doing social media and design by day and chasing my personal passions with my evenings. That included client brand projects, such as logos and just about everything else. As well as carving in my time to create fun things. I got a big break with the take off a passion project went viral, a deck of cards dedicated to black revolutionary figures called The Revolution Card Deck. This deck of cards was conjured up during my time at Mizzou and blew up once I graduated and decided to push it. This project leads to me and my creative mind getting both National and Local Coverage. It was featured on CNN, NPR and Fast Company. It also went to be sold worldwide and is still sold today in Made in KC and online. I also got the change to be on TV with local new station KSHB 41. It also led to partnerships with companies I cannot name… which is great, lol.

This was an amazing leap and served as a launch for my creative career in Kansas City. It opened my eyes to the mountains I can climb if I keep going.

I am now building up my design-based creative platform while continuing to collaborate and partner with brands to build up and build out their image.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not always. My biggest struggle has always been time usage and management. As a solopreneur, I tend to try to take on most things alone when In reality, I don’t have to. As I grow and expand, I am learning to let others in on the journey and allow them to help me with my dream and vision along the way.

When trying to do things alone, you become aware of even more things you may not know. After I received 600+ card deck orders, I realized two big errors I made…I didn’t apply tax or shipping …big OOPS! Lucky this was just round 1 of orders and my margins were large enough for there still to be plenty of profit. This served as a learning experience and a chance for me to truly learn e-commerce and the platform I am selling through.

Another struggle is just the mind, while in this entrepreneurial journey, you have to develop a strong mind. One that will constantly remind you of your why. Why you began, where you intend to be, and how you will mentally push through even if the path is not drawn out for you.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am Kearra Johnson. I am a creative. I dream above the standard. I create with a passion driven by the belief that nothing is impossible, and with that I use all that I have to make my dreams and those of others into a reality. I specialize in brand design. I work with dreamers, small businesses and entrepreneurs to help them build their brand and visually tell their stories.

I am most proud of my ability to adapt. As a hybrid designer, I have the ability to pivot and be a versatile asset with every brand I partner with. Some may need an entire rebrand, I can do that. Some brands may need a logo, I can do that. Some may need graphics for social media, I can do that. Some just need overall creative direction and strategy, I can do that. And if I can’t do it, WE can get it done.

What sets me apart is my ability to see and dream above the standard, I always see potential and the chance to do and be better.
