Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Boos.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started crafting in 2019 and quickly found it helped with my anxiety. A little background on my anxiety… My husband and I had tried for 5 years (2012-2017) to have a second baby. We had a daughter born in 2010 and knew we wanted more children. We tried some infertility treatments and suffered 7 miscarriages during those 5 years. I saw two specialists who both recommended IVF. The cost was too much.
We decided to look into adoption which also costs quite a bit. I was driving home from a Doctor’s appointment when I heard a commercial about foster care on the radio. I talked to my husband when I got home, and we decided to become foster parents. We were fostering a baby when I started crafting. I started with vinyl project, mainly shirts and then expanded to sublimation and bleach and tie dye. The name of my business comes from our experience with foster care.
Chaos… because it was complete chaos at times. We had two babies a toddler and our biological daughter at the time and it was just chaos. Alibis came along from the toddlers and our bio daughter. Any time something was broke or someone was crying, each kid had an alibi to explain why it couldn’t have been them that broke the item or made the other kid cry. This continues today!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was pretty smooth. I think the legal side of the business has been the most challenging. Bookkeeping isn’t my strong suit so I struggle with that piece. I work full time during the day, so my business is small and my customers started out as just friends and family. It’s slowly grown through customer referrals and Etsy sales. I’ve been fortunate to sell to local boutiques with much larger followings.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I strive to put a unique spin on the items I make. I love working with bleach, fabric ink, and tie dye on shirts and sweatshirts. I want my customers to have options that are as unique as each of them.
My goal is to build a brand that everyone can find something that speaks to them. The main part of my business is Kansas City wear. I love that Kansas Citians celebrate being from KC and wear clothing to show their pride.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m pretty much an open book… probably an oversharer.
