Daily Inspiration: Meet Emma Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Taylor.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my freshman year of high school, I decided to take my first ever Graphic Design class. I was always a creative kid but had never taken an art class before. After getting used to the programs, I really started to enjoy creating digital artwork. I had an amazing teacher who encouraged me to create artwork for the school and outside organizations. I was commissioned for everything from logos to playbills to T-shirt designs. I fell in love with Graphic Design and marketing. During the winter of my Junior year, I made some of my friend’s stickers for Christmas. I designed them on my laptop and figured out how to make them as fun gifts. Soon after, their friends were asking me to make them stickers, but I did not really want to sell any, so I just blew it off. Fast-forward to my senior year, and because of COVID, I was left with a lot of free time. I was still designing posters for my Graphic Design classes and creating designs. While sitting at work one day, I decided that it was time to try selling my artwork. Due to the interest in my stickers from the year prior, I decided to open an Etsy shop and see if anyone would want to buy them. I didn’t really think that I would have much success, but to my surprise, people all over the U.S have ordered my stickers. Since opening my Etsy shop nine months ago, I have had pop-ups at multiple events along with having my stickers in multiple local retailers around Kansas City.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A lot of my challenges with my business have been fear-based obstacles. I had the idea of selling my artwork for almost a year before finally acting on it. My fear of failure and what others would think of me prohibited me from starting Studio Em earlier. Thankfully I have been able to navigate operating a business while balancing school work and a part-time job with the help of my family and friends. I am extremely thankful for all of their support.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Graphic Design. Most of my posters and prints are cityscapes or landscape artwork. I am mostly known for my Kansas City artwork.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I could see stickers becoming less popular, and that is why I have been working on expanding my product line to include items like keychains and pins.
