Daily Inspiration: Meet Connie Cervantes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Cervantes.

Hi Connie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was inspired to start my event design company, Divina Designs when I was planning my daughter’s birthday parties. I always had a very creative vision and theme in mind for each of my daughter’s birthdays and went over and beyond to create a beautiful and fun event for my family and friends. At the time, there were not many event design companies in Kansas City, especially ones that specialized in glamorous, extravagant events. I was always asked by friends and family to help plan and design their parties and it made me realize that I could actually make a career out of this. I began to take balloon sculpture classes and attended wedding trade shows to learn more about the industry and quickly realized that this was something I was extremely passionate about. Not only am I able to use my creativity to bring amazing designs to life but I get the opportunity to be a part of beautiful memories for my clients. Fast forward to September 5th, 2020, I launched a clothing brand along with my beautiful daughters, Crystal, 31 and Briana, 25. Our brand, Divina, is a contemporary women’s clothing store. We are currently online only at www.shopdivina.co but have recently announced our storefront which will be opening this fall. We have always had a passion for fashion and are so excited to be able to style our clients with the latest trends.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of our biggest challenges was launching our online boutique during the Covid-19 pandemic. We had been preparing for our launch day for months before the pandemic hit the U.S. and were eager to share everything we had worked so hard on. When the pandemic started and states began lockdowns, we knew it was going to be extremely risky to launch. We began to question if we would even get the support we needed as the pandemic impacted so many people financially. We considered pushing back our launch date but we knew that there was never going to be a perfect time for us to launch, we just had to go for it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an event designer and planner and I specialize in upscale weddings. I am known for putting together glamorous and extravagant events. I am most proud of the fact that my daughters share the same passions as me and have worked so hard to bring our visions to life. Our boutique has been something that I have dreamed of for so long and to have my daughters just as invested in it means the world to me. Both of my daughters love anything related to fashion and beauty and they definitely get it from me!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have taken many risks throughout my career. I would say that launching my event design business was a risk in itself. The event design industry in Kansas City is very seasonal. During the winter, there are not many events, especially being that I specialize in wedding decor but as a business owner, I know that I will constantly have to take risks and step out of my comfort zone. I strongly believe that amazing things come from taking risks and not playing it safe.
