Daily Inspiration: Meet Amina Hood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Hood.

Hi Amina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started making hats by chance.

About eight years ago a friend asked me to make her a hat and I quite emphatically told her that I didn’t make hats. She encouraged me by saying, “I think you could.”

As a child, I pored over fashion magazines, developing a life-long passion for couture fashion. My professional background lies in luxury retail and I attended textile school; however these endeavors hardly qualified me in the millinery world. If you’re not familiar with the term a milliner is a hat maker. For years I just made hats for friends and as a creative outlet for myself. Amina Hood has organically grown from there. A few years ago, I entered Lock & Co hatters millinery contest in London and ended up being a finalist. While in London, I realized that this was absolutely what I was meant to do. To further my craft, I’ve also studied couture millinery in New York with renowned milliner Anya Caliendo.

I’ve had so many amazing opportunities to expand my company. I joined a millinery guild in New York and had a hat featured in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Recently, one of my creations was in a Vogue editorial and my first international cover of a magazine for L’Officiel. Currently, I am expanding my commercial wholesale line and in talks for an upcoming partnership to grow my brand.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Last year was definitely a rough year for the millinery world. So much of my business is based on travel and events which were not happening. We used the time to focus on pr and business development and it really paid off.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Couture millinery is done all by hand using the finest materials. I am known for my custom designs, sculptural style, and attention to detail. I have designed hats for clients globally and they have been worn at The Kentucky Derby, Royal Ascot in London and Paris fashion week.
