Daily Inspiration: Meet Adam Lock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Lock.

Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started with a love of drawing. As a kid, I remember making Star Wars comics with my cousin. We would craft our own characters and stories and draw every panel by hand. Fast-forward many years to high school, where I continued to pursue my interest in art. I was exposed to world of Graphic Design for the first time and was instantly hooked. Fast-forward again and I am now entering my Junior year as a Graphic Design major at the Kansas City Art Institute. Now, my work focuses mostly on hand-drawn typography and illustration. My personal style is inspired by vintage logo design and traditional tattoos and fueled by coffee and the great outdoors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely a winding road. What comes next is never clear, but that’s part of the fun of pursuing a creative career. There’s no one right way to do things; just whatever works for you. Over the years, I’ve definitely tried some things that didn’t work. It’s certainly cliche to say, but failure is a part of the journey. But above all, I think it’s just about putting in the work. The “10,000 hours” or however long it takes. Time and effort yields results. I’m still far from the finish (if there even is one). I have many more hours to put in and lots of creative growth to go.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My primary interest is in brand design and I specialize in typography and illustration. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients on logos, rebrands, and more. I’ve always had a love for the hand-made side of design. Producing something physical (even if its final form ends up on a screen) creates an opportunity for a unique character that can often be lacking from a lot of design I see nowadays. It’s a way of letting the “artist’s hand” be present in the work. I’m a believer in drawing to design. Letting the computer do all the work is no fun.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
You’re gonna suck at first, so accept it and get to work. My older brother always likes to say “is that person really more successful than you, or just ten years older?” Pursuing a passion of any kind takes commitment, hard work, and lots of time. If you aren’t producing the kind of work you want to, or you think you’re no good, keep going. Keep trying things. It gets better, I promise.
