Today we’d like to introduce you to Sukhmeet Kamboj.
Hi Sukhmeet, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I initially picked up a camera about 8 years ago out of a sheer passion for cars and being a car guy. But I quickly learned that cars and motorsports, while I still enjoy them from time to time, wasn’t really what I wanted to focus on. I loved interacting with people, sharing their stories, and put my attention to making sure I can document people’s milestones and life stories. This resulted in my primary focus becoming weddings and family portraits.
I pride myself in sharing these milestone sessions, no matter how big or small, in a truly unique way that represents those in the images. I love to incorporate anything such as props or locations that have historical significance into how we create images that are truly you.
I truly love what I do and my clients turned friends will tell you that I make sure that we have fun in the process because at the end of the day when you’re having fun is when. your true self comes out.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I still work a full-time job in the corporate world so I’ve certainly run into obstacles in having to balance both my day job and the business. But I’ve also had a very strong support system around me that both supports me and encourages me when needed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I chose to specialize in Weddings and Family Portraits because to me, those are some of the instances where true, raw emotion comes out in full spectrum. What sets me apart from others is that I truly try to make the sessions as personal as possible. Tell me about things you like to do, landmarks or props that have historical significance in your life, and any fun facts about you. I’m a very chill and laid-back person, which my clients will tell you definitely carries into our sessions. My goal is to make you feel relaxed and everyone you talk to will tell you that’s exactly how they feel from our first phone call together.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those just starting out, my advice would be to always keep learning. I never studied photography professionally, but I did read articles daily, go out and practice new techniques that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and asked questions to those more experienced to learn more.
When I started out, I wish I hadn’t put so much focus on gear. Everyone goes through Gear Acquisition Syndrome, but knowing what I know now, I could’ve easily pushed myself more with my equipment at the time as opposed to buying what I thought would make the images what they end up being.
