Conversations with LaRonda LaNear

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaRonda LaNear.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started We Got It Covered in 2017. We offer careering and food management services in the Kansas City Mo/Ks area. Often hosting events for my friends and family, I took what I love and turned it into a career. As a child, I always noticed that food brought my family together. It was always laughter and good times. I started off meal prepping and catering small events. Four years later, 80% of my revenue is derived from corporate accounts.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest struggle was making it through Covid. With stipulations being put on crowd gatherings, I was forced to stop catering, which was my main source of revenue at the time. The pandemic hit me hard. Determined to not let my business fail, I came up with innovations ways to substitute my income which included selling dinners daily, door dash and Instacart.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I initially did not plan on offering food management service. The opportunity was brought to me by my cousin Larry. He worked for Owens Corning at the time and he wondered if I had ever thought of offering food service for employees. I met with the company and was hired as the food management contractor, running food operations Monday-Friday. I have now had contracts for five different companies, and we are looking to expand! I did my research and my ultimate goal was to become the first black female-owned food management service in the United States. After five months of hard work, I acquired my WBE/MBE certification, making me the first black female-owned food management service in the United States. One of my biggest accomplishments and something I am most proud of.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can look to collaborate with me by contacting us for your catering or food-management needs. We are always open for new clients looking for a reputable company to offer food-management options for their staff or patrons.

We are also very active in the community, we feed the homeless often, as well as host a yearly event called “Warm up KC”. I started this event with Alexis Henry owner of Yèu Body Care. At this event, we offer free clothing, hygiene products, blankets and all things needed to make it through the winter for those in need. We are always looking for donations for this event.
