Today we’d like to introduce you to Kariesha Johnson.
Hi Kariesha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started creating delicious memories with my grandmother as a tiny tot. However, I didn’t realize my love of baking until high school in a Culinary course that was offered. There was a cake decorating unit they had and after decorating my first cake. It bought me so much just to stand back and look at what I had created. Then enter into the DECA completion up against schools all over the state, as the baker for my kitchen team and taking three places with no practice. I couldn’t believe that talent was something I possessed. I planned to attend Culinary school after graduation, however my Grandfather who was footing the bill passed away on my 18th birthday. With little faith in myself, I ended up with a summer job that lasted ten years plus a failed marriage and three little people to raise. For whatever reason, I just always knew working for someone else was not for me. So while working, I kept trying to get started with my dessert career. Finally, I got tired of struggling with jobs that never payed the bills. I just dropped my check stubs and began to really focus on my goals at hand. (Which have always been make money and spend time with my children). Not ever thinking it would be this way, however I am so grateful to just be. Like wow, I am really doing what I said I always wanted.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smooth at all. I have always struggled with socializing. Definitely reaching out and speaking to people trying to get them to buy my products. Being aware of how dope I actually am has always been a struggle. Because to me, I am just me no one important just a goofy girl who loves being in the kitchen. Building a consistent following. Not giving up when the money isn’t there.
There have been plenty of days when I’m like ya know maybe I should just get a job.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I bake and design custom cakes and desserts. I am most known for my hot cocoa bombs which are a huge seller around the holidays. But I love to make all the desserts that remind me of my childhood baking with my Grand and kind of flip them around just a little.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Sitting in the kitchen with my Grand and helping her make Christmas candy, pies and cookies.
