Conversations with Elise Kwenin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Kwenin.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
It all starts in childhood and during my early learning experiences with my mom. My mom always made learning fun and exciting. She taught me how to read before Kindergarten and engaged my siblings and me in learning activities such as themed writing challenges and math enrichment games. At school, I felt confident and performed well because I strongly understood the concepts I was learning. Fast forward to college, where I decided I wanted to instill that same love of and confidence in learning to as many children as possible and become a teacher. During my 10 years in the classroom, I encountered all kinds of learners and experienced tremendous success in learning to lead differentiated activities and engage learners at different academic levels. While teaching, I was also tutoring on the side and truly enjoyed how I could incorporate many of the activities I’d learned. I also ensured I met students at their exact level because I could meet with them individually. This passion for tutoring motivated me to pursue it full-time. Advanced Care Academy began as a private tutoring business and is now a full educational consulting business. We provide private tutoring, student math workshops, professional development, and consultation for parents and educators. I truly enjoy any part I can have in helping students have meaningful and engaging learning experiences that build their confidence and understanding in school.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As we continue to grow, the road gets rougher, but greater challenges come with greater opportunities for success. The balancing act of keeping on enough tutors and evenly splitting clients based on best fit and grade level is challenging. The supply and demand aspect of the tutoring has been challenging. I always want to ensure that when a parent calls to request tutoring, I have a tutor available to help them. I also like to ensure that all my tutors feel satisfied with their hours.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an educational consulting business. I provide:

  • Private tutoring
  • Math workshops for students
  • Professional development for educators
  • Consultation for parents and educators

Between our tutors on staff, we can tutor students from Pre-K to 12th grade. As the owner, I have a hand in all our services. My specialty is math! It is my favorite subject to teach because there are many different ways to explain and present the content. I love using escape rooms, puzzles, drawing visual models, and playing math games with dice, cards, and dominoes. I use these interactive activities with my workshops (K-5th grade) to engage students in math content. I’m most proud of taking the leap of faith to leave my full-time teaching job to start Advanced Care Academy. Entrepreneurship is tough mentally because nothing is guaranteed, but the rewards are amazing! The moment I accomplish great growth with a client or lead a great session, it is gratifying and makes me believe more and more in my abilities as an educator and entrepreneur. The breadth of our services sets me apart from similar businesses. In a partnership with a school, I could teach students, coach teachers, and work with parents on how they can support their child’s learning at home.

Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
Seeing the world with my family makes me happy! I love having the ability to experience different cultures, music, foods, and sights. I love curling up on the beach with a good book and putting it down to jump in the waves. My favorite travel destination has been Portugal because of the beautiful landscape and the amazing food.
