Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Carla Love.
Hi D’Carla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a little girl, I played with Barbies and had beautiful ladies I would see on TV, Cher, Farrah and my Mom, they were always fashionable and glamorous! So that is where I felt my passion. I began to draw clothing (I still have all my drawings) and made a few pieces. Through the years I have worked in Merchandising at Old Navy and Boot Barn and styled for the ecommerce sight of Sheplers/Boot Barn.
Giving clothing life is such an inspiration, it is how I paint! Give customers ideas on how to wear a piece(s) that a designer worked so hard to produce.
My styling has brought me to reselling on Poshmark, I style the clothing and post it, have a YouTube channel (DLoveofFashion) where I give tips, how-to’s, etc. I am continuing to grow and branch out, Personal Shopping, make Pinterest boards for a client.
My Future is bright and I have the Sunnies to wear with whatever outfit!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but that is how one learns and grows. My family didn’t encourage (no blame) to follow my passion so I didn’t know how to make a plan or go to schools in California for fashion.
I worked jobs I didn’t want to do just for a paycheck but fashion kept saying don’t give up. I continued to shop and draw and be unhappy.
Retail I figured was a great option, I learned alot about products, how to do displays but the money and hours aren’t favorable. And some managers don’t believe in using the talent they have.
Then I had the opportunity of the lifetime to work at Sheplers! I was so happy and shined, I never worked there, I just created. It was Christmas everyday! Learned to style on figure and sell the product on live models or Barbies as I called them. It was a dream come true! Then we got laid off.
So I moved my passion to Social Media, resell clothing on Poshmark, post my outfits, create outfits from pieces I find and have a YouTube channel (dloveoffashion) and recently had a Personal Shopper gig. We shopped and she tried on pieces and I gave her tips on how to wear pieces and what worked for her. Created a Pinterest board so she can go back to use as a reference.
Maybe I didn’t have official training but I feel some people have a gift and should share it and use it. It feels sometimes when you go to schools it is about their ideologies, their thoughts, structure. Art is organic, non-judgemental, goes with the flow, it happens naturally, not about rules!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Fashion is my Passion, it is about self-expression! What is my mood today? Serious? Fun? Rocker? Boho? You can be whoever you want to be each and everyday! My friends know I can style and recreate outfits, I am their go-to. I am proud of what I learned at Sheplers, we had a great team, we were all so creative and I loved to see what each one of us brought to the table. Most of my work is gone off the website but I loved how my styling, the model’s putting life into the fabric and our photographer capturing these moments.
I don’t believe in rules, I style organically! It isn’t about you shouldn’t wear something, let’s try 100 pieces on until we get the right fit. There are so many designers and pieces. Just try it!! We are all so beautiful, we must embrace our beauty!
How do you define success?
Success is never giving up!! It is ok to fall down but you must get back up, learn from what happened and be like Wile E. Coyote and keep going! It is going to be worth it in the end! Never look at something as a failure! I have tried so many things and so many times but I look at what I learned knowledge-wise and mentally!
