Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Waring.
Hi Angela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I are avid DIY-ers and remodeled every inch of our 1965 ranch style home in Springfield, MO.
I was attending a class at AR Workshop Springfield with a friend as we were about ready to move to the Kansas City area. The owner immediately said we should open one up here. I have been an MRI tech for over 20 years and thought I would never be able to own such a business.
Well………..we moved to Lee’s Summit and decided I was ready for a change and here we are.
I obviously love helping people and now help them in a different way. We give them a place to come and relax by themself or with friends and family all while creating something they love for their home. No one ever wants to have an MRI, but people come to the shop because they want to – I say the shop is good for my soul. I have met some of the most amazing people that I would have never met otherwise and now can call these customers…friends.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ohhh goodness. We opened our doors June 15th, 2019 and had nine months to get our feet underneath us before the pandemic hit and closed our doors for eight weeks.
Our workshop, at the time, was only in-person workshops which we could no longer host. We changed our business model to DIY To-Go kits, providing everything from the wood to sandpaper and paints to give our customers something to do while at home during the lockdown.
We survived the shutdown but are now struggling with the skyrocketing of lumber prices as the majority of our projects are wood-based.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a boutique DIY workshop where you create on-trend home decor from raw materials – wood signs, canvas pillows or wall hangings, chunky knit blankets and much more. We provide all the materials, tools and instruction, our guests simply register online for the project type, size, and design. Everyone gets to choose exactly what they want.
We can have a full workshop and everyone is doing something completely different-that is the beauty of it! You get to customize your project at the workshop with our paints and non-toxic wood stains (no fumes!)
Our classes are for all ages and skill levels. You can attend by yourself, with a group, or even book a private party. We host youth birthday parties, summer camps for kids, adult birthday parties, date nights (2 people work on the same project together), bachelorette parties, and team buildings, you name it and we can do it!
You are welcome to bring in wine and snacks to enjoy at your table during the workshop.
Love to shop? We also have a small retail area full of fun jewelry, home decor items, specialty food and drink kits.
We want our guests to feel like they are at home and to get away from the hustle and bustle of “real” life even if just for a few hours. My most proud moments are when customers become friends. Meeting and collaborating with other female-owned small businesses has also been a highlight of the last year, we are all in this together and lift each other up.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m an open book and can talk to anyone all day long that walks into the workshop but puts me in a room full of strangers and you will find me in a corner all by myself.
