Community Highlights: Meet Spencer and Sarah Martin of VanLife KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer and Sarah Martin.

Hi Spencer and Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
We have always wanted to own a camper van and travel around as a family, but as an educator and a nurse, we knew that we would never be able to afford it. Most people buy stuff like that and use if once or twice a year so it wasn’t worth it. Then we started thinking about how we could try to monetize the van and the idea for VanLife KC was born!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, we started a travel business right before the pandemic so it was a slow start. Once people realized that they could use camper vans to travel and stay safe, business started booming. We created the #CampingIsSocialDistancing to try to spread the word about how you can still travel safely. We have had some amazing renters and it has been great getting to know a lot of people around town.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about VanLife KC?
We rent camper vans and small trailers so you can #ChooseYourOwnAdventure (or perhaps adVANture?) We help people plan trips and get everything they need to do for an epic trip into the outdoors. Some people use it as an adventure van for a base for a big hike or bike ride. Others use it to take the family out camping and have a few more amenities available while outside. Our vans are different than a typical RV in that they are more rugged and designed to be used, not fall apart. We take normal vehicles and convert them so that they can be used as a home away from home while still getting away from it all. If you don’t have any camping supplies, no worries! We have lots of add-ons that can make the trip work out for anyone.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Our business was well positioned, but we didn’t know that at first. We always meet with renters outside and are helping them engage in outside activities, so it works pretty well, all things considered.

  • A rental runs from $79 – $250/night (not including taxes and insurance)
