Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Quarles.
Hi Marissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Starting out, this was only supposed to be a hobby. Just something new to try out. I always knew I wanted to start my own business but never thought I’d fall in love with Locs. I began servicing my first loc client May 28, 2020. A year later, I’m still going stronger than ever, and my clientele is growing very quickly. From starting Locs to reconstructing a 15-year-old set of Locs back to health – I find joy in it all. I started out working inside my house. Then soon after with only three clients and vision, I stepped out on faith and began my journey at my current location, Hair Pleasures Salon. Even though doing Locs is still part-time for me, my clientele has grown tremendously, and I am hoping to soon be able to be a full-time Loctician.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. I truly believe that nothing comes easy, I still have a lot to learn when it comes to owning a business. Creating my business plan, learning the financial aspects, and even researching the legality of a business…it’s so much to learn. Eventually, my vision is to quit my full time and be a full-time Loctician. It’s all so scary but I refuse to let that fear deter me from the life I dream to have. I believe most of my struggles come from me wanting things instantaneously. Being on the other side as a business owner I’m learning that the behind-the-scenes work seems like it’s never ending but I believe that if you really want something, you’ll go after it by any means necessary.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Twisted Kreations was established to focus on starting, repairing, and maintaining HEALTHY Locs (dreadlocks). I specialize in everything Locs. As I’m continuously growing, I ensure I am up to date and well trained on the latest loc techniques. I like to educate all my new clients on the locking process from beginning to forever (because there is no end in having Locs). One thing that sets me apart from others in our area is my specialization. I offer no other services but loc services and I welcome all hair textures. Many times, people are told they are unable to loc because their hair is too straight or does not curl, it’s a myth. I’m capable of locing any texture.
I believe that special services need special attention and just like you go see an OBGYN or orthopedic doctor for their specialty practices, you should also see a Loctician for your loc journey.
When I came into this, I didn’t know the actual meaning of branding your business and finding your niche and goal. As I’ve learned and continuously learning, I’ve decided to rebrand my business. With a new set of eyes, a new vision, and a new mission but the same quality and care I have for my clients. I am hoping to launch soon and ultimately grow even bigger than just Kansas City.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
More like blessings and favor from God. He has played a major role in my life and my business. The people/clients I continuously come across are heaven sent. I truly believe that each person I’ve encountered this far has either provided me with life lessons and/or words of wisdom and vice versa. With the whole business and family balance, I can say with God, my husband is understanding and is slowly growing to the idea of me one day soon being a full-time entrepreneur.
This year, my focus scripture was Habakkuk 2:2-3, “Write the vision, make it plain…and wait…” I’ve done that and I’m continuously watching things happen that I wouldn’t even imagine happening this fast. Stepping out on faith and going into a shop with only THREE clients was a true testament of my faith and soon, I hope to own a building and build my new brand beyond my own imagination. I can say I haven’t had any major issues since I’ve started… *knock on wood*… and I hope it stays that way for a while.
