Community Highlights: Meet Marcus Gates of Thriving Lives Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Gates.

Hi Marcus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Five years ago, I was entering my final year of college and heading into my second bodybuilding competition (which I would end up winning the competition, earning my pro card, and becoming a professional natural bodybuilder) when my girlfriend Nikole Hudson, who is now my wife, encouraged me to start helping all of the people that were reaching out to me to improve their lifestyles and body composition. I started thinking of names for my coaching business and boom, I landed on “Thriving Lives Fitness”.

My goal when creating Thriving Lives Fitness is still the same today: to guide people on their journey to a sustainable, well-balanced lifestyle centered around health. Though I am a bodybuilder, my passion is helping the average person understand nutrition, understand balance and how to apply it within their lives, learn how to properly exercise and how to align their training with their goals and individual needs, and to help them overcome the obstacles that stand in our way when improving our health. The world of health and fitness can be very overwhelming and I want to simplify the process for my clients.

Flash forward to December 2021, I have had the incredible privilege to help over 400 people improve their lives through individualized nutrition and exercise programming; helping people to develop a better relationship with food and with their body’s, improve their confidence, and their understanding of what works for their body.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As with running any business, I would not say it has necessarily been smooth. The journey to this point has been full of times of self-doubt, of long nights and early mornings, all while balancing a full-time job of teaching elementary physical education. My fear of failing myself, my clients, and my family can sometimes seem insurmountable but it’s in those moments that I work harder, I invest more into my education, and to continue growing as a person, as a trainer, and as a coach.

We’ve been impressed with Thriving Lives Fitness, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Thriving Lives Fitness is primarily an online lifestyle, nutrition, and personal training business; though I have started training clients in-person as well at Body Shop Gym and Personal Training (10344 Mastin St, Overland Park, KS 66212).

I specialize in helping clients develop well-rounded lifestyles focused on habits and routines that can be seamlessly integrated into their lives. What sets me apart is my ability and prioritization to connect and build meaningful relationships with my clients based on consistent communication and trust: this allows us to make more breakthroughs, overcome obstacles, and continue improving week after week.

I am most proud of myself and Thriving Lives Fitness because it is helping people make sustainable changes in their lives and I know it is empowering people to take control of their life. I love checking in on my past clients and to hear that not only have they been maintaining all that they learned and started with Thriving Lives Fitness but also that they have continued improving in other areas of their lives thanks to their newfound confidence in themselves.

Client Onboarding: The onboarding process starts with a phone call consultation in which I speak with clients about their goals, their current and past lifestyle habits, their history of dieting, and we review aspects of their health such as gut health, digestion, metabolism, stress, and sleep. The client then chooses from my program options which are based off of client needs in terms of the depth of guidance and accountability that they need and that program is customized to fit into that client’s life. Once a program has been decided on, the client will then complete a questionnaire which covers in-depth many of the health topics that we discussed in our initial consultation as well as client biometrics and the client’s dietary preferences. Lastly, I add the client to my training app which is where all aspects of the program are streamlined with everything, they need in one app: progress tracking, nutrition, training, messaging/communication, and accountability groups. Depending on the program, clients will checkin’ with me monthly, tri-weekly, or weekly.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anybody starting a business/career in personal training or nutrition and lifestyle coaching is that you must have a passion for helping people and a passion for building meaningful relationships with people. If people are trusting you with their vulnerabilities and insecurities, with their health, with their journey then you must care for them to the best of your ability.
