Community Highlights: Meet Kenny Personett of Empire Dance Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Personett.

Hi Kenny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Empire Dance Academy opened in 2017 as Kansas City’s pre-professional and professional drop-in dance studio. Since then, we have started two renowned dance companies, classes for young artists and recreational dancers of all ages as well as having recently expanded into a new and larger state of the art facility. We continue to offer the best dance training in Kansas City with a highly experienced faculty.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, Covid was and certainly continues to be a struggle but we have a knack for handling hard times with grace and taking on the bumpy roads with an eager, willing and open-minded attitude.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Empire Dance Academy?
Empire Dance Academy has become known in Kansas City for offering the city’s top classes in hip hop, contemporary, jazz, jazz-funk, heels, contemporary ballet, musical theater and more. It’s our faculty and the level in which our classes are taught that separates us from the pack. We have also lead the way in dance film, creative space, artistic shows and pre-professional dance companies. We began with wanting to cater to the professional and pre-professional artists, thus it was important to us to have a knowledgeable and experienced faculty. We now offer classes for all ages and levels and have expanded into a bigger facility to accommodate our rapid growth. We are a creative space which supports and welcomes all walks of life. One of the things people comment on the most is the electric energy in each class and the support of the dancers in the room. Kansas City truly has one of the best dance communities!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Kansas City is extremely diverse and we love that. We have people take class that just want exercise, some that are new to dance and some that are professionals. No matter the experience everyone is extremely welcoming and supportive!
