Community Highlights: Meet Hannah Magee of Weston Wine Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Magee.

Hi Hannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2014, I helped the original owners of Weston Wine Company develop and launch the brand as a secondary piece of their existing winery business. As much as I loved getting to know customers, marketing a fresh brand, and selling fun wines, I decided to focus on my “career” and step back from my work at the winery. I had a dream job in marketing and thought I would chase the corporate ladder. Boy was I wrong! I was unexpectedly fired in 2017 and found myself wondering what was next. I poured myself the biggest glass of whiskey I could, cried for an hour, and then called the owners of Weston Wine Company to ask for part time work while I got back on my feet.

I talked with the owners for a couple of hours, discussing what my role would be and what they needed most in terms of resources. Then they asked me the craziest question – “Have you ever thought of owning a winery?” Of course I had! But I always thought of owning a winery as a retirement goal or a fun win-the-lottery plan. The more I thought about it though, the more it made sense to take a big risk at a young age; if I failed, I would have plenty of time to make up for it!

At that point, I was 26 years old and married to a guy with a very stable career; I even had a savings account and great credit score. I began pursuing financing to purchase the business and in the middle of being “thisclose” to getting a loan, my husband and I separated. I went from being very attractive to lenders to being a very risky investment for them. I had to chase down banks until I found one that would lend to a young, single girl who had just moved back in with her parents.

I purchased the business in 2017 and tried my best to run it the way Weston Wine Company had been run for the past few years. It turned out I didn’t know nearly half as much as I thought I did and I was making really poor management decisions that almost cost me the entire business in 2018. I’ll tell you that story sometime over a glass of wine.

I made key changes to the business, like differentiating my products, offering new experiences, and hiring truly excellent staff. I began substitute teaching and working at other local shops to pay the bills. It seemed like I was finally crawling out of the hole I’d created for myself when…the pandemic hit. Luckily, I’m surrounded by an excellent group of friends and a supportive community that reminded me we could make it through.

Today, Weston Wine Company is a bustling wine tasting room that specializes in fun wines made for fun people. We are open Wednesday through Sunday and host at least three special events each weekend, ranging from pub trivia nights to murdery mystery parties to tarot card readings. We love celebrating birthdays and bachelorette nights with our customers and can’t wait to see what crazy ideas we come up with next!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think I’ve covered my major obstacles and challenges in my Story section, but there is something new every day that challenges me. Over the past year, dealing with ever-changing pandemic rules and regulations meant I felt like I was recreating my business every day.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always believed pairing wine with experiences is just as important as pairing wine with the perfect foods. Weston Wine Company offers build-your-own wine flights and tons of fun events to make sure you have ample opportunity to figure out what wine pairs best with both a salted caramel cupcake AND playing Cards Against Humanity with your mom.

Some of our most popular events are pop-culture themed trivia nights and murder mystery parties. We specialize in activities that get you off of your phone and into great conversation with your friends.

Nestled on the main street of a charming, historic town, it’s easy to forget about the rest of the world from our front porch. When you stop by to see the Weston Wine Company team, you’ll be greeted by a smiling face in the tasting room as well as a great recommendation for what other shops you should visit or where you can grab a bite to eat. We love our little town and we can’t wait to share it with you!
