Community Highlights: Meet Charlene (Charlye) Taylor Gray of Flowing Strength

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlene (Charlye) Taylor Gray.

Hi Charlene (Charlye), can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Being a licensed massage therapist wasn’t in my cards. I just knew that I wanted to help others and was tired of working at a big box department store. So, I started massage classes in February 2010. I worked nights while going to school during the day. I graduated in April 2011 with an Associate degree at Heritage College.

I worked at a few small massage establishments. There were both good and bad places to work. My confidence waned until I went to work at a massage franchise where the lead therapist help me get my confidence back.

I worked there for 4.5 years and even though I really liked it there and the other employees, it was going in a direction that I was not. Thus, I decided to move on and find a massage franchise close to me. I am still there and have been for just over 3years.

I have always wanted to have my own business. I didn’t have any knowledge of owning a business and didn’t have the finances to do so.

So 2020 was when everything came together. Around June, I met with another LMT who wanted to open her own business. This fell through as the location she wanted to rent was taken by another.

Then in August, she let me know about another location. This one proved fruitful. I took ownership and I opened up October 17th, 2020.

My massage style is orthopedic or what I like to call ‘Mediorts’ (medical and sports). I listen not only to the client but also their muscles. I use stretches, trigger point work, range of motion, along with traditional massage moves to provide the best massage experience I can. Because of this, I have had many satisfied clients. I hope to have many more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, lack of confidence during my early massage career and deciding to open during a pandemic were obstacles that I had to overcome.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a massage and wellness center that works not only on helping my clients to have less pain and stress and increased mobility and flexibility in their everyday life. But to also change their mindset about themselves. I am a focused LMT and will stay on an area until worked out to my satisfaction. I use basic massage techniques along with passive and active range of motion, light stretches and having the client either push against or keep me from moving an area of the body. I also use tools like tuning forks, lacrosse balls and golf balls to help in my work.

I don’t allow my clients to negative themselves. The world does that enough as it is. I have two main life philosophies which are ‘Life is shitty, but makes great fertilizer’ and ‘Dreams are sometimes found in the midst of nightmares’. All subjects are allowed to be discussed, even if I disagree. As long as it is done with humbleness and respect.

Because of all of the above, my clients leave feeling like I ‘fixed’ them. When in fact, I just helped their bodies fix itself. I truly believe that this is what any healing profession actually does-helps people heal themselves.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
How you see yourself can go a long way in how you feel both mentally and physically. Just because it is in your head doesn’t mean it isn’t real. The placebo and nocebo effects are very strong and what we say can make a difference.
