Community Highlights: Meet Becky Lana of Celestine Jewels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Lana.

Hi Becky, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a mother of 3, born & raised here in Kansas City, MO.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an artist. For me, creating is a lifeline. I draw, I paint, I write, I sing, I style, I photograph. Whatever I can do to make something my own, I do it. Growing up though, art wasn’t a practical career to pursue to my parents, so I kept most of my talents suppressed until I became an adult. It wasn’t until I started having children that I realized I was truly gifted.

That I could actually make money with my own gifts & ideas. I started sharing my drawings & paintings on social media and people took to them pretty well. I even sold several originals & prints. But I soon realized that I wasn’t the type of artist who could create on a whim and produce content at a massive rate. I had to be inspired! Understanding this, I knew that I would need a supplemental source of income besides just selling art here & there. Last November, I started brainstorming business ideas. I needed to do something that would allow me to have a flexible schedule for my family and also allow me to express myself creatively. At the time, I looked down at my hands and noticed all the silver rings I was wearing. I thought to myself “What if I sell jewelry?” I especially liked the idea of not having to make the jewelry myself so that I could maximize my time and minimize my spending costs. I researched the sterling silver jewelry market, wrote my business plan, obtained all my licenses, purchased my inventory, and after four months, on March 1, 2021, Celestine Jewels was launched as an online store. I chose the name Celestine (pronounced sell-is-teen) from my father’s name Celestino which derives from the Latin word for “sky” or “heaven”.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the first two months after launching my website, it wasn’t the smoothest road. I was selling in-person to my friends & family but I really struggled with making online sales. I paid for a few online ads which increased online traffic but hardly converted to sales. I still don’t make as many online sales as I’d like, but in May I started vending locally at different events & venues which has boosted my sales tremendously.

We’ve been impressed with Celestine Jewels, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Celestine Jewels specialize in sterling silver & gemstone jewelry. We currently offer rings, chains, anklets, toe rings & bracelets. We recently released our newest gemstone collection that includes 6 beautiful sets of necklaces & matching earrings. Many of our pieces are unisex. All of our gemstone jewelry is made with natural gemstones and handcrafted in India. Most of our plain silver jewelry is made in Los Angeles. We enjoy being able to provide a one-of-kind shopping experience for our customers knowing that they won’t find the same unique styles or quality anywhere else. On our website, you can find sterling silver jewelry care tips so that you can keep your jewelry looking shiny and new for years to come.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was labeled a “square”. I liked reading chapter books, playing Banjo Kazooie on my Nintendo 64, drawing, and playing the violin. As I got older into my preteen & teenage years, I lost a lot of my interest in those things and allowed outside influence to steer me in a different direction. I became very rebellious and boy-crazy. It wasn’t until I found the Lord that I began to find comfort in being myself.
