Community Highlights: Meet Amanda Michelle of Rocky Suns Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Michelle.

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband and I have always had a passion for all things “old-style” farming. We started homesteading about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it! We were able to provide our family with healthy food all while tending to our land and animals with the care and devotion that they deserve. We found that we could provide a lot more than we could ever use, and decided to start selling our extras. Now 4 years later we have a building that we stock weekly with all our farm fresh and homemade items. We can now provide others with the same wholesome food that we so proudly feed our own family!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles in farming. Losing a loved animal is among the hardest. We care deeply for our animals and try to give them everything they need and more. Unfortunately, sometimes there is just nothing that can be done. With the produce side, we will never know enough. We have made it a goal to learn as much as possible about Natural and organic gardening as possible. Every year and every season is different. Some bring new pests, drought, wind, and floods. As a farmer adapting has been one of the most difficult things to figure out.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A little about us! Located in Parker Ks, we are a natural-minded farm that is bringing our love of sustainable farming to customers. We have a passion for growing quality produce, eggs, and meat and dairy products with no added chemicals or pesticides. We offer chicken that is pasture-raised with access to fresh bugs and grass daily! Our produce is grown as naturally as possible on nearly 2 acres of gardens. Our gardens are growing yearly as our customer base grows! Our laying hens also have access to green grass and bugs, which offers a deep yellow sometimes even orange yolk! Our Dairy Goats are milked twice daily and given fresh alfalfa hay and lots of room to run!

We offer a box membership! The boxes are to be picked up at the store or a local meeting place and offer a wide variety of produce, meat, eggs, and breads!

In our on-farm store, we offer many items that are not food-based. We hand render lard to make homemade wood wicked natural candles! We have natural luffa for cleaning, natural lip balm, soaps, crafts and so much more!

We have four amazing little boys who range in age from 3 to 10 years old. They are very active with all things on the farm and love caring for the animals and gardens right beside us. We are teaching them young to respect the land and animals in order to provide a quality product and happy animals.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Perseverance. This line of work is not for the faint of heart. We cannot leave in the middle of milking season or gardening season for more than half a day. Any time we are raising chickens we are also stuck at the farm. We are constantly trying to come up with new ideas to bring customers into the store.

On top of the farming side, we have to be salesmen, bookkeepers, fence menders, scientists, and bakers. We have to know how to market to the right group of people and know animal husbandry. We have to be organized planners to know which plant gets planted and what time, how often, and in which plot. We have to be mechanics, builders, candy makers, pipe layers, and creative to a fault.

When they say farmers are “jack of all trades” They really aren’t joking! We take it step further by tackling many different businesses and turning it into one!

While I am sure all of this sounds exhausting (and it can be) It is truly a labor of love! We have a passion for doing what we do and have no intention of stopping!

I’ve had and tried several different items from rocky suns farms and they definitely don’t disappoint. Everything is fresh and taste amazing. Plus they are a great hard working caring family. If you haven’t tried them yet or been there, you need to.

They come to the Paola, KS Saturday early evening Farmers market ( before the start of a free concert on the square). Very friendly couple- wonderful breads and cookies. Their produce is great and unique , as they aren’t afraid to try new varieties. Impressed that they get all this done with 4 little ones. What a healthy passion- wish them success!

I’ve visited the farm late in the season and was absolutely amazed at what this young family has done. I will be visiting more often and encourage everyone who loves day trips to the country to please add this awesome farm to your list. You will not be disappointed!
