Check Out Rebecca Van Beek’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Van Beek.

Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As people grow increasingly aware of their own diets and what’s in the food they are eating, it’s only natural to start thinking about our pets too. We are Becca Van Beek and Benjamin Ledbetter, the local owners of Pet Want Lee’s Summit, and we’re looking forward to sharing our knowledge about the pet food industry, talking to people about what makes our products different – the freshness and the quality – and building a community.

We are best friends and we started working together at Barnes & Noble near our Kansas hometowns. Our journey has taken us around the country since then. Becca has been working with animals, she worked in kennels and as a veterinarian technician and, for the last 18 years, in the zoological field. Benjamin is experienced in customer service and has a passion for mentoring. We have a 4-year-old Great Dane named Goose.

Pet Wants’ specially-crafted, private-label pet food formulas are made in small batches with fresh, natural ingredients enhanced with vitamins and minerals for a complete and balanced diet in every bowl, all made in the USA. We have multiple blends of dog and cat food formulas as well as healing salve, calming balm, anti-itch spray, paw wax, and more. We offer free, personal delivery in Lee’s Summit, Raymore, Belton, Pleasant Hill, Independence, and Blue Springs.

We’re thrilled to own Pet Wants Lee’s Summit and to be serving our community members and their pets. We look forward to meeting you and your furry family members!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We have had challenges getting started in a new state. Moving from Portland, OR to MO, definitely created obstacles. Getting our business through all of MO paperwork and in touch with the right people took a while. We have also met many incredible and supportive people but have run into challenges just getting our name out there.

We are mobile and don’t have a storefront and COVID has put a damper on events and on the community’s wallets as well. It is a challenge to share our excitement about our company, but we are finding so many other supportive small businesses. We are so appreciative of our customers and all of the furry friends we have made so far in our journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We work really hard to provide nutritional guidance to our customers. We have excellent food and treats for both cats and dogs. We also carry many local products. We have crochet cat toys from a friend in Blue Springs, amazing frosted cookies from Barkville Bakery in Peculiar and the cutes bow ties from Cheeky-Chic in Independence.

We are proud to be involved with so many important organizations like Midwest Animal ResQ, WiNc, and Shep’s Place. We have also done some fundraising and food donations for Chain of Hope. One of our favorite places for events is the KC Art Garden, the community there is so welcoming and we have made many friends there.

Events have given us opportunities to meet the community and provide nutrition, treats, and fun to our furry friends. We have free local delivery and spend much of the time cruising around making deliveries throughout parts of Kansas City, Liberty, Belton, Blue Springs, Independence, and more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
You know this whole business came about out of the blue. Both of us were needing to make changes in our careers, we were facing layoffs. We had joked around about going into business together and both love animals. This opportunity presented itself just when we needed it. Pet Wants has given us an opportunity to work and to live closer to our families.

We are back in the midwest. The pieces just fell together. So I guess that is good luck, right?
