Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulie Serrone.
Hi Paulie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Pistachio Approved started about 6 years ago. I have always had a passion for art. In previous years I loved working with clay. There was a point when I shifted mediums and discovered I liked working with wood instead. I started taking old pallets and turning them into tables and benches. One of my very first pieces was a coffee table for my living room. As I brought it into our home, Pistachio jumped up and sat right on top. We laughed and said, “Serrone Made, Pistachio Approved” and from there on it stuck.
As time went on my hobby started catching the attention of others. I quickly started picking up projects for family and friends. I started to think I could do this for a living. I decided to quit my job of 11 years – two weeks before my wedding (You can say I have an AMAZING wife) – and started making furniture full time. It is a true blessing when you get to turn your favorite hobby into a career.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has had its peaks and valleys like any new business. Recently with the cost of lumber so expensive clients seem to be more hesitant to spend for that special custom piece.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Pistachio Approved we make custom Furniture. Anything from kitchen tables, cabinets to beds. I only work with hardwood lumber and try to stay true to the natural color. I, as a carpenter, value the lumber and the different colors and variations that each tree brings to the project. I try and stay away from staining any piece. If you like the brownish color, go with Walnut, if you prefer a lighter wood, you can choose White Oak or Maple. I feel what sets us apart is that we want to love the project as much as the client and if we feel that the project is not right for us, we might pass. It’s not always about the money, we need to love what we do.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Staying true to who we are, we do not need to take every project that comes our way. We take the ones we know will set us apart and have the best outcome.
