Check Out Latrese Kabuya’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrese Kabuya.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Wow! Long story short. My background is in the makeup industry. I worked with different beauty brands, did countless runway events, and freelanced. One day I received a call from a friend who had suggested I go on one of the local Lifestyle shows and do a beauty segment. I said no but my hubby who is my biggest advocate said yes.

I found myself on the show and I was like cool I can check that off my list. Well little did I know it would start a career in TV. I did beauty segments for several years. Well, that opened the door for another local Lifestyle show to discover me and used me to do their segments and eventually hired me to do “fill in co-hosting”. That was an amazing time because I was able to be myself and connect with the community. Fast forward to now, I am finishing my Master’s in May for Social Work. My goal is to become a licensed therapist (micro side of social work) and advocate, and researcher (macro side of social work).

All my life I have advocated for those who didn’t have a voice and always helped people with their problems regardless of what I was going through. I believe that therapy is necessary and needed and that is what changed my life. I love to help people get through their trauma and live their best life. it is possible sometimes people just need to know there is someone rooting for them.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
NOOOOO! Wow. Where do I start? As a youth into my early 20’s my self-esteem was low and I did not value myself. Although I was always smiling and helping others, I was suffering in silence. After a horrible divorce and other challenges, I had to pick myself up and fight for my life.

I realized that I had value, I was important, and the world needed me because there is no one like me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently serve as an intern at a nonprofit providing therapy. Once I graduate in May 2022, I will open my practice and serve the community. My focus is trauma-informed care. I am proud of overcoming so many traumas in childhood and adult life and now I am able to give back and help others live a healthy productive life.

What sets me apart is my honesty and my authenticity. I have been blessed with a God-given gift to help people, discern when people are hurting, and fight for those who cant. I am on this earth to reach, touch, and impact lives.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Give yourself GRACE!! It is such a challenging time so make sure you are providing yourself grace. Some days may be easier than others and that’s okay. Love yourself more and love others around you.
