Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylin Hobbs.
Hi Kaylin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My earliest childhood memory was watching my mom work out. That was in the late 1970’s so we are talking full-on leotard and tights (no wonder I can’t forget)! I think it’s fair to say that from that moment, my passion for health and fitness was born.
Despite being active, as an adolescent and young adult, I struggled with weight and body image issues. It was a very dark time for me as I fell down the black hole of an eating disorder but I was blessed to emerge from it victorious. I believe my destiny is to help others–to help them take control of their health, to help them realize their strength and above all, to help them love the skin they are in.
After graduating college, I worked in corporate America for several years in a marketing role but what really fired me up was teaching group fitness and personal training clients before/after work. When I turned 40, I decided to fully follow my passion and pursue my online nutrition, fitness and wellness business and it’s the best decision I ever made. I created my brand “Badass by Design” because what I do is all about helping others to feel their personal best; however they choose to define it. It’s about crushing goals, having a positive attitude and loving yourself every step of the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When it comes to helping others achieve their goals, that is never hard. But creating a successful, full-time business of helping others has come with its challenges. The biggest challenge is simply finding clients who are truly ready to make a lifestyle change. I have learned that imposing my goals for others never works- the fire must come from the client and then I can effectively coach and guide them to goal-crushing nirvana. That really is the toughest aspect of maintaining a thriving business in my field. I don’t mean to sound cliché, but it is absolutely true that when you find what you are truly passionate about it never really feels like “work” at all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an online Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Nutrition Coach, Reiki Master and Group Fitness Instructor. I’ve been in the fitness industry for 23 years now with a solid reputation for getting clients results while keeping it fresh, challenging and fun!
I believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to truly relate to my clients. I do know what they struggle with. I know how it feels to be frustrated and like you want to give up so I know how to coach through it. On the other end of the spectrum, I can also relate to my more elite athlete clients. I am an accomplished marathon runner (I’ve run Boston twice and qualified four times) who is always striving to achieve new goals so I also know how to coach at that level. I have an innate ability to connect with my clients and figure out how I can best serve them to reach and even surpass the level of success they desire.
What are you most proud of?
My clients! Their joy makes me unbelievably happy because I know to my core what that really feels like! I’ve been there… I get it! Knowing I had a part in helping them feel more badass is the best feeling in the world!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am fortunate that I have traveled all over the country and I can honestly say I LOVE Kansas City! When I describe it to friends, I always say “it’s big enough to offer everything you could ever want, yet small enough to feel connected and call it home.” The people are what makes our city so great. I love the way we all come together for the big things while celebrating the individuality that creates such a dynamic community.
