Today we’d like to introduce you to Érica Harris.
Hi Érica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2012, I nominated myself to make cupcakes for a bake sale at work where all of the proceeds would go to a local breast cancer foundation. Afterwards, my co-workers would ask me to bake some for them. one person even told me I should sell them, I kinda giggled at the thought of someone actually wanting to pay me to bake cupcakes as this was just something I enjoyed doing freely.
I eventually made a Facebook and posted a few pictures of my cupcakes & This is when I knew I was on to something. In the beginning, I would drive around the city meeting my customers and delivering their cupcakes, I personally wanted to provide a more personal customer service experience so I saved some money and found a location off 12th St in Kansas City. Here is where my customers could come to pick up their orders or just walk in for cupcakes and ice cream. With many of my customers purchasing for their child’s birthdays, I had another bright idea to offer birthday parties as well! So cupcakin became that one stop shop cupcakes ice cream & birthday parties.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth ride. The biggest struggle I encountered was when the pandemic struck, there was so much uncertainty do to the unknown of this virus. We had to minimize staff, reduce hours, parties were canceled. I had to learn how to pivot. Right when I thought everything would be ok we were hit again with the riots on the plaza, So it has been very challenging these last 18 months.

Although Cupcakin is a bakery, we specialize in creating magical memories for children. When our little guests leave, they say, “Best birthday party ever” at that to us makes it all worth it. To see those smiles makes us very proud.
