Check Out Dani Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Jones.

Hi Dani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I felt like I didn’t belong—like I wasn’t supposed to be born. Life kept handing me the short stick with abuse, rape, assault after assault, bullying. I never thought I’d see 18.

Live journaling on Reddit and Tumblr helped me process everything happening to me growing up. Then I discovered photography and videography and the love affair truly started. I’d save all my money for months to get these little point and shoot cameras. Whether it was a quick snap of something that made me smile or a moody editorial that told my story, it helped me heal those old wounds. Making silly skits with my friends made me feel happy again. It was truly saving.

Five cameras later and the love is still strong. I documented my adventures, bits of my pregnancies, my children’s birth, their childhood, the happy and the sad. Oversharing online actually gets you pretty far, apparently!

When my husband got relocated to Chicago, I was all alone. It was a struggle to find mom friends in my new area. I had no one to really talk to so I turned to social media. I vented about postpartum depression, marriage struggles, being a witch, being a young mom, the good and the bad all got prime time slots on my feed. Not only was it helping me release these negative emotions but also celebrate the good; and now I have this incredible group of strangers who feel more like friends.

As I’m nearing 10k on Instagram, a milestone I never in a million years thought I’d reach, my mind continuously blown. I have this great supportive community that’s growing daily. Through my passion for writing and photography, I not only found peace but new outlets, new opportunities to embark on and made some pretty great friends!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It feels like I’ve hit every roadblock you can, from not being taken seriously to getting shadowbanned for hosting a giveaway, even people in the industry trying to undermine me. It’s wild how brutal it can be to get your work out there, let alone validation that it resonates with someone. Staying consistent, even if the odds don’t seem in your favor, is really the only key!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mainly known for my photography and writings—more like rambles—on life, motherhood, spirituality and mental health. Come July, I’ll actually be taking clients for my own photography business!

Over the pandemic, I began writing short stories and novels again. It helped me disconnect with everything going on throughout 2020–both globally and personally. A few gems came out of those months of insanity so I’m looking to publish my first book come 2022 as well as launch a podcast for canamomma’s on 04/20/22

Having a creative outlet that helps not only myself but others is big for me. My posts started as a way to make sense of my messy life and messy mind but now it’s lead me to so much more and because of that, I’m proud of it!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
A lot of my friends I’ve actually made through social media help me the most. Having friends in this industry has helped a lot! If I ever need advice or help with what to do, I know they got me. Or a Facebook group’s got me. Although I don’t use any kind of manager myself, I’ve heard lots of folks say it’s just like having a friend in the industry that can help you navigate the do’s and how’s!
