Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Dezort.
Hi Anne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been passionate about our planet and making sure to leave no trace. SOAP refilling seemed like a no brainer – why aren’t there more of these- someone needs to do this in the Midwest – you can only say those things to yourself so many times before you take the matter into your own hands. So we did. We opened our first location in Springfield MO, in the summer of 2018 and our second in KCMO at the end of FEB 2020 – yep, what a time. But we had a solid two weeks of business before the lockdown so… that is neat.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, minus the last year – It’s been so smooth that I am blown away more people don’t act on their own ideas and start their own businesses. If you have a mission, you can stand behind it’s easy. Before we do anything in business, we ask ourselves – does this align with our mission? – if the answer is no, we drop it and think of something else. I’d say the most challenging part has been picking lighting fixtures. There are so many options! The SOAP part is easy- it’s JUST soap.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As far as my professional background here is a super quick sum up. Went to film school-graduated-worked for a regional natural market in the art/marketing department-Learned a lot about myself, advertising, small business to big business management/growth, sales and ordering on multiple scales, project planning, community event planning, and ultimately follow through. I put that job in my back pack and traveled for years ending up in the west where I became closer and closer to mother nature. I kept finding clients with other small businesses that needed nourishment and my help. I kept learning about running a business as I helped others out of their personal/professional “big pickle” situations. I figured if all of these other people are hiring me to help them run/fix their small businesses maybe I should try it on my own? I may be OK at it. I was looking for a way to get mine while also being able to give back just as much or more. Then SOAP found me.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Kansas City RULES! I have been to so many of our nation’s great cities, and Kansas City is by far a favorite! HELLO, FREE WORLD CLASS ART MUSEUM! The people here have no idea how cool it is either which keeps it approachable and humble. It has every cultural amenity you could want with room to grow. And it seems to be actively trying to be its best self. My least favorite part is the potholes.
