Today we’d like to introduce you to Ammy Dang.
Ammy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Both of my parents both came to America from Vietnam. They had little education, didn’t speak much English but did what they could to provide and raise four children. My parents did what they could with what little they had and that included my dad cutting all of our hair and me giving hand – me – downs from my older brothers. So growing up, I didn’t really feel pretty and was pretty much a tomboy. I grew up with nothing but brother so I never knew how to do my hair and makeup and I wasn’t allowed to do any of that.
When I was 16, I got my second haircut at a salon and oh my god, this haircut was amazing! I loved it and it made me feel so beautiful. I felt like I looked good so it makes me feel good! I knew that I wanted to recreate this feeling for someone else one day! Ever since that day, I always seek out learning how to do hair and makeup. I would always ask my friends to help me curl my hair or coloring it and help me with my makeup. Then YouTube became a thing and the role somehow switched and I ended up being the go-to girl to do your hair and makeup.
In 2012, I graduated cosmetology school at Eric Fisher Academy in Wichita, KS and then went back again for my Esthetician license in 2014. I love the industry so much that I wanted to do everything! Hair, makeup, nails and facials. I love educating myself and learning something new. Not only did I love learning things, I also love teaching things. I’ve done many photoshoot, weddings and runway shows. My team and I even won Best Hair and Make up in one of our Aveda Catwalk for Water.
I moved to Kansas City in 2017 to work at another Aveda salon as a hairstylist and I became an Aveda Ambassador in 2018. I educated my team member about new products and also updated them on new current events. I am currently working at an Aveda salon in Westport called Gravitas Salon where I am continuing being an Ambassador. Next week I am excited that I will be going to St. Louis for a Bellemi Hair Extension class. My passion to make people look and feel beautiful has never changed. I love what I do and I love to share what I do.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I do feel like the more that you work in the industry, you will learn what you will need to continue to grow and be happy as a stylist. You learn your value and your worth. I struggled with that because I love what I do so much that I could do it for free! But at the end of the day, my education isn’t free. I put a lot of time and money into my career and you got to learn your boundaries and your limits.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My favorite thing to do is a big transformation. I love it when I can do a big color and cut. When someone comes in and has all-natural hair and wanting a big blonde or blue or pink balayage and cutting like a foot of hair off, I am LIVING MY BEST LIFE. I also love color correcting too. When someone comes in and needs their hair fixed because someone messed up their hair, I love to solve problems and try to fix it. It might be a journey or an instant fix but it is so satisfying. What sets me apart from others would be my passion. I always try to be better than I was yesterday. I’m always try to keep growing and learning new things. I really value my relationships with my clients and team.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice in finding a mentor is to find someone who is willing to teach you everything they know. Someone who is not in competition with anyone else but themselves. I value the mentors who just wanted to me to win and to grow, I was always willing to go the extra mile to help or be involved whatever they need help with. It’s a great way to network and there is so many things you can learn doing that.
