An Inspired Chat with Rev. Dr, Nicole S. Mason, Esq. of Brookland/NoMa

Rev. Dr, Nicole S. Mason, Esq. shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Rev. Dr, Nicole S., thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes, I recently had a client who was facing removal from his federal position. He was a decorated veteran and made a mistake on the job. It was my honor and privilege to serve him, as it is to serve all of my clients. I take the time to pray for my clients every day. In each case, I can feel the weight of the situation, and I take each case to the Lord to ask for guidance and direction. In the instant case with the decorated veteran, I was so happy to prepare an impactful written response and to prepare on oral script for my client to follow when making his oral response to the Agency’s Deciding Official. After three weeks of waiting and encouraging my client during those three weeks, we received the notice that his removal was not sustained; but rather he was given a ten-day suspension. He will keep his job, be able to continue taking care of his family, and, more importantly, he will be able to speak well of God and His delivering power. I am proud to utilize my law degree to serve others and make a positive impact, especially during these unprecedented times.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Dr. Nicole S. Mason. I am a wife to my college sweetheart, a mother to three sons, a MaMa to my SugarBaby (Grandson), an anointed preacher of the Gospel, and a fierce attorney. I am driven by passion, excellence, and a strong commitment to serving God, as well as a heartfelt desire to make a positive impact on the World.
In addition to practicing law, I have been serving women via preaching, teaching, coaching, and mentoring for the past twenty-five (25) years. I have a mandate from God to help women to be unapologetically who God called them to be, never shrinking back or dumbing themselves down to make others feel comfortable in their space. My brand is #SHOWUPGREAT, a registered trademark, with the tenets of authenticity, confidence, competence, and courage! I encourage women to follow their God-given dreams, create success on their own terms, and never apologize for being beautiful, brilliant, and a straight-up “badass!”

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My Grandmother, my Shero, my Heart, my example taught me about work. My Grandmother, Edna Mae Maynard, had an 8th-grade education. She migrated to Washington, DC, from South Carolina with my grandfather in the late 60s. My grandfather, George Washington Maynard, was a Master Tailor. He made all of his clothes, and he taught my Grandmother how to sew. My grandparents opened a Tailor Shop, G. W. Tailor Shop, a dry cleaning business. They rented the building where the business was located for approximately 20 years. Then, my grandfather suddenly died, and that left my Grandmother with a choice of “sinking or swimming.” My grandmother was the youngest of ten children, and her older brothers told her that they would be the “wind beneath her wings” if she wanted to continue with the business. My Grandmother moved forward with confidence, competence, and courage! She went on to operate the business for the next 30 years, totaling more than 50 years. I had the blessing to grow up in my Grandmother’s shadow, learning how to operate a business from as far back as I can remember. I am the woman that I am today because of my Grandmother and what she imparted into my life. I understand clearly that my Grandmother’s success was a matter of survival, and my success is a matter of choice. My Grandmother’s sacrifices are the very foundation of my success, and I will forever honor her sacrifices by putting forth my best effort(s) in everything I do!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You were never meant to fit in, so embrace your uniqueness…YOUR UNIQUENESS IS YOUR SUPERPOWER!!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that my family really matters to me, of course. But right along with my family, they would say that my relationship with God and executing and implementing the call of God on my life is extremely important to me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am doing what I was born to do! I am confident that God called me to preach. I feel most alive when in the moment of preaching. I have been very intentional in finding purpose in everything that I do. I know that I am called to empower women to be who God calls them to be. Thus, I help to build confidence. Confidence includes standing up for oneself, speaking up for oneself, etc. Wherever I find myself, I am executing purpose!
