Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Evrard.
Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I found my passion for photography as a high schooler, making skateboard videos of my friends and skipping culinary school for photography school. The University of Central Missouri was my mother’s alma mater, and they offered a BS with a photography major, and I was hooked. From there, I was really influenced by the Magnum photographers ( Cappa, Haas, Cartier Bresson) and the NY School ( Penn, Avedon, Hiro), and most of all, Helmut Newton, who was in a league of his own but stylistically like the NY school. I would do a lot of shoots in my spare time, which was all the time, emulating what I saw and felt from these photographers to develop my style. I’ve done a lot—a wedding photography business for years alongside my more passioned fashion, lifestyle, and portraiture endeavors. I have done photo assisting at Hallmark Cards. I have shot music for the KC Star for a few years, focusing my business on dance, fashion, fitness, and portraiture. Clients that keep me busy include Quixotic Cirque Nouveau, Eleve’ Dancewear, and many others.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been challenging being a photographer. It requires a hard head, some luck, and a lot of skill. The business is an art but also tied closely to commerce and trends. Gaining skills in technology along with continued development of style is a constant.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in photographing people. Particularly people in motion. Dance, music, fitness, etc. I am also known to have a style that could be described as sexy or edgy.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve realized that you can share?
It is OK to live a life free of alcohol.
