Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Stone.
Hi Sophia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I fell in love with makeup because of my sister. I would sit and watch her apply makeup and be so intrigued; she knew how to do the best-winged eyeliner and always let me play with her makeup. She is truly what started my love & passion for makeup. As I got older, I started wearing more and more makeup. I still remember waking up early before school started and putting on my silver eyeshadow by L’Oréal. I was 8 then and thought it was the coolest thing on the planet. As time passed, I started watching YouTube tutorials; I would watch the OG YouTubers like Jeffree Star, James Charles, Tati Westbrook, and Nikki Tutorials. YouTube started my love for colorful & more creative makeup looks. I started my Instagram and YouTube channel as a 6th grader. I would post all the makeup I was doing (many are no longer on my pages. They were embarrassing). I loved what I was doing; fast forward to high school, I learned that there was a cosmetology program at a career center that I could attend during my senior year. So, I kept my grades up and took extra classes to get the best resume to try and join the cosmetology program. Luckily for me, I was 1 of the 20 students chosen. This grew my love for beauty even more. Now I have graduated and have done KC Fashion Week, wedding makeup, and even the makeup for Worlds Of Fun Haunted Houses! Makeup is truly a massive passion for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not! I have gotten a lot of backlash for my looks. I often get told that my makeup looks too much or ugly or that it is “unprofessional.” I don’t let that take me down, though; makeup is my biggest passion, and I will never let anyone tell me I cannot do what makes me happy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist who can do any makeup. I have done everything from SFX (blood, gore, monsters, etc), face painting, glam, colorful, weddings, and so much more. I am known for my out-there makeup looks! I wear what I do in public, which is hard sometimes because people stare! What sets me apart from others is that I can do any makeup. I have no limits.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
Just be yourself and never let what others say influence your passion. One told me it would be hard to get criticism when I started, but it was worth it.
