Rising Stars: Meet Kyesis Cleaver of Grandview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyesis Cleaver.

Kyesis Cleaver

Hi Kyesis, We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to becoming a Nurse Practitioner started in 2010. I obtained my BSN in 2014, continued my education, and graduated with my MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner degree in 2020. I currently work in geriatrics. I ventured into the Airbnb business with a good friend, and we were named the top Airbnb in Missouri in 2022. I have participated in Career Days in the South KC school system. I want to become a mentor to young girls who are interested in the medical field. I also compete in bodybuilding competitions!

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The road I took to be where I am today was challenging. The undergraduate program was complex, let alone obtaining my second degree during COVID. Competing in bodybuilding competitions takes a lot of dedication and self-discipline. Being in the medical field is challenging, but my confidence grew the longer I was in the field, which helped me succeed. Having young girls, friends, and strangers look up to me makes the challenges worth it.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a nurse practitioner in a rehab/long-term care facility. Essentially, I take care of older patients who had a recent hospital stay and are admitted to rehab for therapy services. I also take care of nursing home patients. People typically need help differentiating between a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and a Medical Doctor (MD). The best way I can explain my job is I do everything a doctor does but have a different degree. I write prescriptions, order labs, and manage patient’s care while they are in rehab. I am most proud of the fact that I have good interactions with/ patients. They express that I am a good NP and my co-workers! What sets me apart from others is that I genuinely like my job. I go above and beyond for the patient and often serve as their advocate.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it involved you, and any essential lessons or epiphanies you can share?
COVID taught me to slow down and start doing things I am interested in. I want to be confident to make certain jumps, like going into Airbnb or competing in fitness shows. As corny as it sounds, we only have one life to live, and I intend to live it to the fullest.
