Meet Meg Wagler of Springfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Wagler.

Meg Wagler

Hi, Meg. Thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Originally from STL, I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from Missouri State University in 2011. I worked in Springfield as a designer or Art Director for nearly a decade before burning out on agency work and pursuing freelance art and illustration in 2019. Since shifting my career to independent work, I’ve been fortunate to paint over 20 murals, complete a few cool art installations, and dig into my love of illustration with international and domestic editorial features in various publications. I’ve been fortunate to form my client list with people doing work that resonates with me, like The Honey Pot Company, The Period Movement, and body positivity-focused apparel companies like Thunderpants. My passion and intentionality to create impact have led to many exciting and meaningful projects, and I’m so excited to continue to work in this way!

Please tell us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth?
My transition to working for myself has been easy because I’m a very driven and hardworking human. Because of my agency background, I had a lot of experience managing budgets, communicating with clients, prepping art concepts for approval, and alot of soft skills that artists sometimes lack. That experience helped me succeed fairly quickly. My biggest struggle is setting boundaries on how much work I’m willing to take on. I was so excited in the beginning phases that people genuinely wanted to work with me and trusted my vision to collaborate. That was (and still is) such a joy that I sometimes struggle to say no or turn away work. As I mature in my business, I’m learning more about my ideal workflow and when I can push it–but more importantly, when I should scale back for rest. I’m still working on this balance, but I’m getting there!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar with it, what can you tell them about what you do?

  • Artist Statement: Meg Wagler is a Midwest visual artist, illustrator, and muralist known internationally for her colorful art and hand lettering. Her bold work is recognized for its vibrant palettes, striking compositions, and messages of self-love.

I’m known locally for launching a new mural art and culture festival, Overlay (formerly MIDxMIDWST). I’m known regionally for my colorful murals, hand lettering, and optimistic energy. On an international scale, I’m more well-known for my illustrative work centered on messages for body positivity, inclusion, and environmentalism.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see a big uptick in communities leaning into public art, particularly murals and street art, as a means of identification. It’s a fascinating time to paint and organize art-centric events because people are starting to understand the value of public art and what it adds to a space. We’ll see more of this in years to come.
