Hidden Gems: Meet Randy Price of Urban Egg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Price.

Hi Randy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2014, founder Randy Price saw an opportunity in the elevated breakfast segment and opened the first Urban Egg in Colorado Springs. The concept was a hit out of the gates, and within a year, the second Colorado Springs location opened. The concept is built around putting people and quality first. All menu items are made from scratch around a philosophy of best-in-class ingredients, flavor profiles, and presentations. Restaurants feature an open kitchen and high-energy environments complemented by attentive, caring, and sincere hospitality. After opening 8 Urban Egg locations along the front range of Colorado, Randy wanted to move the concept out of state to show that Urban Egg would be successful in any market. Kansas City was the perfect market for the expansion plans. Price spent his high school years in Kansas City and returned to Kansas City after graduating college, working with Houston’s Restaurant group in the late 1980s. Price was excited to bring the Urban Egg brand back home to KC and is more excited about his expansion plans in such a great city.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, we have seen great success in the Kansas City market. Initially, we struggled to find great employees as the market had no brand recognition. After a few months of guests and potential employees seeing that we take being an employer of choice very seriously and that we promote a work environment that puts people first, great employees began to find us. We are now ready to expand the brand and continue our plan of bringing a best-in-class approach to guest experience and a working environment for employees’ families. We could not be more excited to grow in Kansas City and bring America’s Best Breakfast to more deserving communities and guests.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We bring an exciting, genuine, and sincere approach to being the best breakfast restaurant in the industry. Having been in the industry since the age of 14, I am passionate and dedicated to all our employees and providing the best guest dining experience possible. When possible, we focus on locally sourced, organic ingredients and serve them in a fun and energetic atmosphere with a caring and authentic approach to guest service. At Urban Egg, we treat our employees as family and our guests as friends. We have won several awards, including Best Pancakes in Colorado and Kansas, Top New Restaurant in Kansas when we opened, and Best New Restaurant in Kansas City since opening. Our commitment to product quality and our teams sets us apart. I am most proud of the compliments I receive from our guests on the quality of the food and beverage program and how all our employees seem happy to be part of such a great organization. At Urban Egg, we will always put our people and the quality of our food and beverage menus first. If we do a great job taking care of our people and focusing on the best food and beverage, the rest takes care of itself.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
A company that is true to its Core Values puts people first and does not waiver operationally can survive anything. We have built the Urban Egg brand organically and did not waiver from our commitment to our teams and our communities throughout the COVID-19 epidemic. We emerged from COVID stronger than ever, have added Commitment to Health and Safety and Resiliency to our Core Values, and have never looked back.
