Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Davis.
Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I have always been a dog lover. I grew up primarily with a Mini Poodle, a Schnauzer, and a mixed breed dog, with which I have many fond memories. About five years ago, my husband and I had 3 kiddos and had just moved my parents in with us. My husband and I had the issue of being first-generation college students and had made the unfortunate mistake of taking out loans to help our way through. We needed to understand how compounding interest worked and had found ourselves in a pickle. My father was an auto body repair man, and my mother was battling Multiple Sclerosis and, at that time, had been in a wheelchair for about 15 years. My dad desperately needed to retire and stay home to help my mom, but raising 3 kids on one income had left him with no retirement. My kids and I had recently talked my husband into getting a Sheepadoodle puppy, and we had all been so impressed with what a great puppy he was. My dad was on the floor resting his legs on a lunch break when the idea of being a dog breeder was born. We loved dogs, and what better way to get a little extra money to help my dad retire and pay our loans off than to fill our home with more puppies to love? We moved out into a home big enough for all of us, our furry friends, and our dreams of adopting. In 2020, our dreams came true, and we sold our first litter of puppies and added our last two human boys to the family. It ended up being more challenging than I had thought. Still, we have built something to be proud of after hours of research, planning, trial, and error, learning about the importance of marketing, lots of cleaning up bodily fluids, and loads of puppy snuggles later. We now have a beautiful family with 5 boys, a house full of the most loving and cuddly canines anyone could ask for, and a thriving business that has helped my dad successfully retire and has been a blessing to our family.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. It’s not easy learning how to get a whole pack of hormonal dogs to live together peacefully without the males peeing on all the furniture. It took more than one or two tries to figure out the perfect setup. Another trial has been learning genetics that affects health, which pairings would produce the healthiest offspring, and how to produce desired coat colors and textures. Top that all off with not making a profit for the first two years, and things can begin to look rough. Before I even whelped my first litter, I read a book that said something to the tune of if you are going to give up when something goes wrong, don’t even start. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it. What has kept us going is the Christmas morning feeling as the puppies are born, the happy faces when people come to pick up their new family members, seeing how much we have grown in just a short time, and the genuine love for the dogs.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Davis Family Doodles?
We primarily raise Cavapoos, Sheepadoodles, and Pyredoodles, striving to produce healthy, happy, beautiful puppies and parents. We work with many families that have allergies and cannot have a shedding dog but deeply desire to have the love and affection a dog provides. We can give them a great nonshedding companion in size and temperament that fits their lifestyle. We are set apart from most breeders because we raise all our dogs in our home or a guardian home but never as outdoor dogs or in a dog run. Our guardian home program allows families who are well deserving of a great dog the opportunity to own one without having to pay the upfront cost while giving one of our parent dogs a great home and family to love. We give our puppies the best start by socializing them from birth, starting them on potty training and kennel training from 3 weeks old, and finding them the best homes where they will thrive and live long, happy lives. All of our parent dogs have a minimum of a full panel of genetic testing to ensure the health of their offspring, and our puppies come with a two-year guarantee. Our communication with our buyers continues beyond two years, though all of our buyers have lifelong support. We love to watch our puppies grow up on our private group for buyers to post updates and connect with littermates.
What makes you happy?
It makes me happy to hear how satisfied people are with the puppies we have provided them. I love seeing the puppies grow and give people an awesome companion to bring joy to their lives daily.
