Hidden Gems: Meet The Hive Women

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Hive Women.

Hello, The Hive Women. We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Hive Women was started in 2021 by six women from Overland Park, Kansas, to help women in the “middle stage” of life connect while also giving back to the community. Our unofficial tagline is “social with a purpose,” we seek opportunities to support charities through social activities, service projects, and education. When we started in 2021, we had a very small group attend our first meeting, but word about the group quickly spread, and women in our demographic were eager to connect with other women. Now, more than 200 women have joined The Hive. We have had many requests to expand, so we recently started a blog (buzzfromthehive.com) and have been working to ramp up our social media presence to reach women outside the Kansas City area. To date, The Hive has learned about our community through local speakers on topics such as The Truman Library, Port KC, Johnson County Community College, and Visit KC, to name just a few. We have had many new experiences, including curling, kayaking, aerial fitness, disc golf, tours of local bakeries, coffee roasters, kombucha production, and more. The Hive has given more than $15,000, over 500 volunteer hours, and donated over 9,000 items to local non-profits. Social, with a purpose in action!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Hive has been fortunate in so many ways since its inception. The biggest problem we have encountered is keeping pace with the organization’s rapid growth, which is a good problem to have! We have added more opportunities to the calendar for women to connect and get to know one another. We have also expanded our reach with the new blog Buzz from The Hive, which allows women to be part of our community beyond the Kansas City metro area. And we are just getting started!

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Hive Women?
We are a women’s organization specific to the “middle stage” of life. Our mission is to connect motivated, middle-stage women through social, educational, and philanthropic opportunities and make a positive impact in the community. We are known as an inclusive group that enjoys trying new things while giving back to local charities. Each month, we focus on a different non-profit, with some proceeds from our activities being donated to that organization.

The Hive is the perfect name to capture the idea of a colony of women working and socializing to bring good to the community. The bee symbolizes community, brightness, and personal power – all attributes we champion for women everywhere.

The Hive is truly for every woman in the middle stage. This can be a challenging time of transition for some women as social circles and work roles often change around this time. Many women are wondering “what’s next” in their lives. The Hive seeks to connect women and even nudge them out of their comfort level with new friends, new activities, new learning opportunities, and new adventures. Life in the middle stage should be fun, and there is so much to explore – join us!

What does success mean to you?
The Hive succeeds when women connect and try new things, all while supporting local non-profits. If we can help, we consider it a win-win-win with The Hive, our members, and the community.
