Meet Katie Winkler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Winkler.

Katie Winkler

Hi Katie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became an RN in 2016 and immediately started working inpatient with children and their families. After having my first son in 2018, I recognized a love for supporting new parents and their babies. In 2021, I graduated with my Masters in Nursing Education and obtained my Certification as a Breastfeeding Counselor. I found a passion for newborns and children through my breastfeeding and parenting journeys. While amid my third pregnancy in the fall of 2022, I came across a fellow RN who had opened a private practice as a Mama Coach. Here, I found a marriage of my passions for education, maternal health, pregnancy, and children! I opened my practice, The Mama Coach- Katie Winkler, in November 2022 and have loved the connections I have made with parents, other healthcare providers, and community partners! In the spring of 2023, I closed the almost 9-year chapter working in inpatient pediatrics, allowing me to work full time in my business as a Mama Coach and a Lactation Counselor in a local pediatrician’s office. As a result, I can now offer in-home and virtual services as a Mama Coach, including free workshops for parents on all things baby! Providing in-person workshops and services allows me to meet families where they are, which is one of the most influential means of educating and offering support. Walking alongside parents and caregivers in their parenting journeys is an immense privilege. Based on my experience, education, expertise, and support, I aim to build confidence and knowledge for parents. Every parent deserves to believe they can understand and meet their baby’s needs and that they are not alone in their struggles or questions–as a Mama Coach, this is exactly what I am here for!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a small business has been a learning experience, that’s for sure! Creating the LLC, filing paperwork, generating my website and electronic health record–it’s all been interesting! I have loved every step so far, as it has taken me one step further in independence and ownership of my business and my practice as a nurse. Building relationships with healthcare providers, especially other local businesses, has been the best way to reach parents and families who want to work with me. I love directing my clients back to other local businesses as well!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My practice as a Mama Coach exists to support mamas and parents. I offer one-on-one and group services, from educational classes to in-home or virtual coaching and on-call visits. I cover topics such as prenatal classes, postpartum support, newborn care, feeding (whether that is breastfeeding, formula feeding, combination feeding, pumping, or starting solid foods), safety classes such as CPR and Choking, sleep coaching for up to 3 years old, and even potty training! Not only do I teach these topics online and in person, but I also send recordings and extensive resources to families after our meetings or class. The eBooks and individual feeding and sleep plans are some of my favorite resources to send my clients, and they are packed with amazing content and evidence-based information (the educator and RN in me love this part!). No topic is off limits, and if I assess a baby or child to need higher level care or assistance, I refer families to the necessary healthcare professional or team. In the realm of coaching, especially sleep coaching, the Mama Coaches across the world (there are over 100 Mama Coaches in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK) are providers of education and support that are evidence-based AND provided by registered nurses–that sets us apart from other companies and coaches that teach similar topics! I am proud to utilize my degrees in nursing and master’s in nursing education in my work as a Mama Coach. The content I provide families is founded on research and always views each baby and family as unique. Families can expect education and support with me to be tailored individually for the goals and needs they identify.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Can you share something that might surprise us?
My family and I (my husband and I have three boys under 5 years old) live on a small farm! We moved to Gower, MO, from Kansas City, MO, in 2021 and recently expanded our farm to include four piglets and two goats! Additionally, we have a flock of over 20 chickens and hope to continue to grow our farm to give back to the community in the coming years! Neither my husband nor myself are from farming families, so we are first-generation and learning a lot! Our boys love the animals, and the work that comes with the farm, and it’s been amazing watching them thrive here!
