Meet Peter Grebenyuk of Overland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Grebenyuk.

Peter Grebenyuk

Hi Peter, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started my band Lorraine-Dietrich back in High School when I was 15. It was my dream to be a musician and to have a band. Also, in high school, I picked up an interest in jazz while playing in the high school jazz band, which ended up with me pursuing a professional musical career and receiving musical education. During my high school years, Lorraine-Dietrich didn’t play many shows, but we did rehearse a lot which helped me gain experience leading a band. We started getting more gigging opportunities in the fall of 2020. Since then, we have played many more shows in the KC and Lawrence area. One of the biggest challenges with running a band is dealing with musicians constantly joining and leaving. It wasn’t easy at first to handle that, but it’s gotten easier as the band has grown, and I know many good musicians as a jazz students at UMKC Conservatory nowadays. The biggest focus of Lorraine-Dietrich is to make recordings and release songs across all streaming platforms. Promoting our music online is more important since the internet has a worldwide reach. That way, we’ve gained much of our following from all over the world.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I’ve mentioned prior, the biggest challenge is to deal with band members who come and go, which is quite normal considering that we don’t get paid or don’t get paid much for what we do. Instead, this project requires a lot of personal commitment and money investment. Truly this band is my family’s startup at this point–both of my parents are involved in the band’s business side. All challenges are business-related, but by now, I’ve learned how to deal with all of them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician, performer, producer, and private lessons instructor. I write original music and lyrics and arrange and record it for my band Lorraine-Dietrich. I’m most proud of the growth in following that the band has gained across all digital platforms and social media in the last year. I was excited when Spotify added our latest single, “Expectation,” to their official playlist, “All New Rock.” What sets me apart from others is that I’m more business-minded with my approach to music.

An example is how we’re trying to build a brand through how we present ourselves. I don’t allow anyone in the band to wear casual clothes on stage because we want a professional look. Our focus on recording has also tied us to growing the business before we go on tour. Many original bands jump straight into touring without recordings on streaming platforms, making it nearly impossible to grow a following.

What makes you happy?
I love making music, and I love to perform in front of people. Music is what keeps me going even in the hardest of times. All of my emotions are expressed through the music.
